for all those comparing XP favorably to Ubuntu please note... I use XP on a machine because quickbooks is not ported to linux. My son the gamer has XP

for existing use with no reason to change it is OK.

all the other computers in the household default to Linux, mostly Ubuntu.

but the end is near. M$ will stop supporting XP someday and, where we must, we will be left running old programs on old OS on old hardware.

I've had one taste of vista and it was sour. zero compatibility. that laptop [compaq V6000] now happily runs Ubuntu 8.04 [LTS]

after using Ubuntu over a year, a difficult XP install is a day dreamed up by Dante!

there have been rumors (and recently some evidence) that valve is porting steam into linux, once that happens the rest should soon follow (hope), so far wine has been handling games pretty decently and getting better at it, I was recently itching to play an oldie I had, homeworld 2, tried installing on XP and it wouldn't work, tried on vista and still no cake.

So since I had no options left, I decided to humor myself and try it in ubuntu through wine: the game works flawlessly.

still there is a long way to go, gaming is still very much part of the windows domain, but little by little things are changing...

With some minor rewrite, Dante's book could be renamed "Windows Inferno".:lolflag:

well here I am day 4 and things may work out this time. keeping it simple I [again] wiped the hdd but I skipped the dell load of 8.04 and only put XP in a primary active partition Ubuntu 8.10 is loading now and it goes into a partition at the extended level. grub will, as usual, install perfectly.

Yep: it just worked!!! now the Ubuntu updates, medibuntu & flash

successfully dual booting xp pro and Ubuntu 8.10 on a dell mini-9

I don't like any Windows, but you're unfairly exaggerating. Vista, like Linux, is compatible with absolutely anything that is ported to it. The break in compatibility with Vista was necessary in order to bring the Windows architecture into the 21st century.

I have a DDS-32 printer that chugs along in XP with win2K beta drivers/utilities. it will print as a generic postscript printer in Ubuntu but I was never able to get it to go with vista and the printer support is 2 mergers/acquisitions dead

no one wants to support old stuff when they have new to sell that is much, much better. the problem with this printer is it was too long lasting. a variant of the IBM infoprint 32/40 and hatachi they all used the same guts with different decoration.

sure vista got rid of the last century "kernel" printer drivers and in doing so a lot of old printers too. part of the perpetual upgrade team of ever newer requirements in OS and hardware.
