How can I connect a MIDI instrument to ubuntu and transfer midi files to Ubuntu for editing and post processing and transfer the result back to the MIDI Instrument?

welcome to the forum. Please take a look at this thread I recently added my opinion (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1009988). Maybe you find useful information there.
If you use an usb-device it is expected to work quite flawlessly. If it is a to-host-device it could be very hard getting it to work properly.
