I noticed the Dells shipping with Ubuntu are shipping with 8.04 and I was wondering how involved the update process would be if I wanted to go to the new 8.10

Is it as simple as clicking "update" somewhere or would it require a reinstallation of Ubuntu?

I've never owned a Linux machine, so I don't know basic stuff like this yet.

I have had success with both methods (update and reinstall) on my 530n.

I've never owned a Linux machine, so I don't know basic stuff like this yet. They ship with 8.04 because it's LTS (Long Term Support) It would be better to do a fresh install of 8.10 if you plan on running it as opposed to an upgrade.

I believe that's for the mini 9. I have installed vanilla Ubuntu on a couple standard Dell notebooks & the sound works great out of the box.
