Remembering the best thread ever inspired me to do this:

I am looking to create a Linux game. I have nothing. No code, no art, no story. I want to get a small team (~30-50) to work on it in your spare time. We can decide what we want to do. Open Source or Proprietary. What engines. What is the game about. Just about everything. If you are interested just post.

I know it's not well thought out but hey, nice experiment.

Also note, I want people who are serious. Keep in mind we are on a budget of nothing. Don't think we are going to make the next Crysis

few questions: -Can you program? -Can you program with OpenGL? -do you have nice chunks of time to spend on developing a game?

im just asking this because, i know these are things me and my friend thought about (we are both looking to be in the game industry, but in different areas) and to get that amount of people will be hard, without a good solid foundation i.e well developed concept of a game, money and lots of time to work on it. im not trying to put you off it, i would help but i don't know much about programming on Linux yet and my programming skills are still very bad =P

I do wish you best of luck with this, maybe once im better we could talk again =D

-I can hack code. I can't program it from the bottom up but I can understand and edit it efficiently if it is put in front of me -Not planning on doing most of the programming -Plenty.

Which gaming genre will it be? a)fps b)strategy i]real time ii]turn based

c)adventure/action d)role-playing e)racing(probably not this one though!)

Is it going to be 3d or 2d? Or a mix of both? A 2d role-playing game isn't too bad, but for an fps or action game nowadays you need 3d!

I have an amazing concept... Writing the book now (slowly) and would love to see it become a game and movie xD. If you guys would be willing to sell the game after its made, its kick a**! (Would be an rpg)

i would say the easiest to make is a basic RPG, then a FPS and then a good RPG. basic RPG would consist of a lower end gfx system and not many customizable options with in the game (looks, guild system, story line). A FPS would have alot of Game Physics programing(how bullets move, how the surroundings effect your body movements and Hit boxes). A Good RPG high quality gfx and a lot of detail in the story line and how the character interacts with NPC and other players. Small details like guild system if its an MMO and customization of your character(armor, character emotions etc...)

What you might want to start with is making a mod of an existing game to start, then if that works and you get more support try making a game from scratch.

I don't like modding. Too many copyright hoops to jump through.

If you have a vista partition, you could mod fate. Thats where I got started with code and texturing. Also, WT encourages the community to mod their game.

Well... I have about 500 3D models usable for game making. I've been kicking around bits for a space epic, a post apocalyptic MMORPG, a science shooter, and an underground MMO. If any appeal to you, just let me know. I'm currently on a motorcycle bender, so if those would help, I'd be happy to throw you my .blend files.

I dont. I have XP. New lappy should have Vista (I will probably promptly remove for XP).

And when I said too many copyright hoops to jump through I just meant that you have to make sure you are including none of the original files from that game.

I do mod but mostly for DOOM 1-3 and Sauerbraten

*imagines a wizard surrounded by lighting with his eyes consumed by a bright light.Fighting multiple dragons and a whole orc camp by with a party of other adventurers slaying monsters by the dozens*

I sincerely agree. :D

Linux needs an opensource Dungeons and Dragons type of game that is unique yet has the rpg feel of those games.

I'm actually planning something similar to the old Gold Box series of games from the 90s that I'll be doing in pure java.

Here's a concept that's going to spare you the hassle of having a story, but will keep the players entertained for a long time: A melee duel game (think gladiator).

It will have several RPG style elements (you choose your characters background, will access new weapons etc) but the melee will be action-based. in other words, same kind as zelda/elder scrolls games. This of course demands good collision detection and thought out controls. But once this is done, you could expand it into a roguelike game and let the placer see other places than just the arena.

+1 it would be very entertaining. A RPG fighting game :guitar:

Seeing this idea come alive makes me all fuzzy inside and I'd happily contribute 3d models to it 8)

I've been writing fantasy/sci-fi novels and short stories for about 3 years now. I haven't published anything because I am lazy and prefer writing to legal crap. Nonetheless, I've always found the games with a good solid backstory and history can be quite appealing. If you want someone to help develop a mythology or backstory or universe I'd love to apply my writing skills spare time to pitch ideas and help out, if that would be a help.

Like I said, I mostly write in the fantasy and sci-fi genres, but I have an extreme interest in post-apocalyptic worlds and typical monster worlds (zombies, vampires, werewolves, etc.)

Let me know what you think.

Sidenote: I've been fiddling with Perl programming lately as well, that might be of use sometime down the road too.

So a 3D RPG game sounds like what the masses want. I guess Wesnoth and Savage need a replacement.
