OMG WHAT THEME IS THAT THAT'S AWESOME!!!
But I'm not exactly sure what to tell you. Is it the theme? I've had similar problems in ubuntu because of a faulty theme. It could be the text color is the same as the menu background, making it invisible for some reason.
It seems like I've answered this before....hmm. Anyways, disable Compiz.
