I got a new computer from http://www.microcenter.com Friday. Gateway DX4710-UB301A Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66Ghz 6 GB DDR2 Dual Channel 640 GB HDD Super Multi-Format DVD RW DL w/ Lablefish Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 15-in-1 Media Card Reader Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium sp1
The kicker is I only paid $496 + tax for this computer.
I said all that to say this, Ubuntu really screams and work excellent with a new computer.
It does, I'm running Kubuntu and can be ripping two cds using K3B and soundkonverter which watching a full screen video of house on my other screen with kmess running and NO swap usage =D
You can always return Vista for some cashback :p
Does ubuntu have a 64-bit for intel? I know that it has 64-bit for amd.
To be honest, I kinda like vista. After hearing all the negative comments about it then using it, I would have to say that those people don't know what they are talking about. I have not had any problems with drivers yet, which seemed to be the biggest issue when vista first rolled out. Even a Microsoft VP said that Vista wasn't ready to be released when it was. I guess SP1 fixed most of the issues.
When Windows 7 is released I will probably buy it.

the 64bit ubuntu version will work on both amd and intel.

Yeah I sold my copy of Vista online for $100. I'm getting ready to buy a new computer in a few months, and when I do, it'll be filled with Linux-friendly hardware, and will come with NO copy of anything owned by Windows. :)

Whatever you like to use. For me, Windows 7 will likely be the first version of Windows that I'll never use. I never owned a copy of Windows ME, but I used it a time or two on a friend's computer, so I can't claim no-use on that one.
But Windows 7? Not likely. I might check some videos out online, and if it looks really, *really* good, then I might give it a shot....but it'll have to make Ubuntu look like a pile of ****, and I just don't see that happening.
But I'm leaving myself open, just in case. :P

That's what I figured. I don't know why Microsoft doesn't look at Ubuntu and Apple and fix their graphics and aesthetics. Maybe they're still trying to blaze their own trail, but it seems silly to me to beat your way through the brush when everyone else is driving on the interstate. :P
Sounds a lot like the comp I bought last February. Gateways have always been good to us here, and Ubuntu seems to like it quite well. The One issue I have (and it's really not a huge one but still kind of annoying) is that my mic doesn't work on it. I think it's my chipset possibly I have a bug open at launchpad but no news yet. The strange thing is my hubby's gateway has the same sound drivers as me under windows, and his mic's work great. Anyway the next comp I buy I'm going to make sure that everything supports ubuntu, as when I bought this one I hadn't begun my love affair with ubuntu yet.

That's kind of what you have to do if you're dedicated to having the best experience with Ubuntu. I know I sort of rankled when Microsoft said this with Vista; the idea of having to go out and buy all new hardware just to make an OS *work* is - despite what many would say - ridiculous.
However, in my mind Ubuntu is worth it. Vista wasn't. So, like you, the next time I go to buy a PC (in a few months), I'll get one that's Linux friendly.
After all, I can't complain about things not being compatible if I didn't even try to make them that way. :)

I picked it up for a steal, been playing with for days now and love the speed of it. Compared to what I had before, this is a major step up:guitar:

It sounds like a good computer at a good price, but it's just crying out for a real graphics card.
After the warranty runs out, put a good CPU cooler in there and overclock that baby to 3GHz! You won't regret it.

I have looked at my bios and there are no options for overclocking.

Considering that my other computer is a compaq proliant ml330 733MHz... this is a big step up.
I want to turn my other computer into a media server, but the only parts worth keeping is the case, hdd, dvd-cd r/rw and pci cards.
