Why I stopped using Ubuntu

Hey,

I started using Ubuntu with Kubuntu 6.06 And it has been a good and fun two years but the thing is there are a few things that really bothered me that made me go back to Winblowz. There are three main things that really bothered me with Ubuntu:

1. The fact that there was some unwritten rule that stated that every update must break a few things: usually some things that need to be compiled manually and some of the drivers.

1. The fact that there were always a few things on my computer that could never work: it was sound or wireless, or dial-up. Basically lack of driver support although that is improving.

1. And finally the fact that Wine is still not fully developed hence there are some compatibility issues with some of the programs that I use, mainly Warcraft III :D

Anyways, I hope this is not the end. I am installing Wubi as we speak I just cannot use Ubuntu as my primary OS. I will be however installing the 9.04 as soon as it is released hoping to find some of my "prayers" fulfilled.

1. I never knew about this rule ='[ *sniff sniff* No wonder all my stuff still works ever sense gusty.

1. This is true :/. My webcam is detected,but not working sadly =[,but hey its better then pre 2000 years :D.

1. I rather use cedega for games on Linux. Besides there is nothing wrong with buying software as long as it works and cedega works.

Anyways I wish you the best and its good to see you atleast still using Linux.

My opinion about this :

1) You don't have to upgrade to every new Ubuntu release, you can stick to the LTS release (Dapper Drake and Hardy Heron in this case).

Yes, i also find it annoying when things like wifi or sound breaks after an upgrade, but as long as the big hardware companies are not backing Linux *properly* i can understand those troubles.

2) If you're willing to pay for Microsoft products, then why don't you buy e.g. Cedega or CrossoverGames to run your games in Linux ?

And about Wine in general. The volunteers of Wine have worked hard for more than 15 years (!!) to reach version 1.0 not so long ago. They have my respect! :)

Ow trust me I tried, but recently I have a lot of assignments due and am not really into tweaking my system every time I need to do something.

As for the first thing, I am not saying that its for every one but for me it is. Every friggin time something broke. Sometimes something small, and other times I was not able to boot into the new kernel.

I did not mean the release updates I mean just the routine stuff. And as for paying for MS products, I got vista with my laptop and basically use freeware: OpenOffice.org, mySQL, Firefox, you know the drill

Okay, good, i understand what you're saying. Though i'm getting curious what was breaking so often and why.

And i bought my netbook without paying the MicroSoft Tax.

I regret this a bit now, because i could have waited and arrange some similar but better netbook from the U.K. with Linux instead of XP installed, with the difference that i then would have had a netbook with a "real" hdd and much more capacity.

Well, probably because most people don't "pay" for Microsoft products in the sense that they go out and say, "Hey, that's a Microsoft product! Let's buy it!"

Usually Windows comes with their PC, figured in with the price. Cedega (which I read doesn't even work that well) and other such software are "extra" cash after the original net price of the PC.

I have yet to figure out this incessant need to upgrade with every new release. As previously stated I've never read or heard of an unwritten rule that requires upgrading. If there is one, I'm in direct violation of said rule.

As for Wine, I find it amazing that a software package is even available to run Windows programs on a Linux system. Think about the reverse logic.

Now that someone knows - hopefully everything is better in your world?

Well back in like 06 and 07 when Cedega was just getting started and such this would be true.

Now though I must say Cedega is very useful.

Like for Starcraft.

It works no problem for starcraft yet with wine battle has had this bug for years.

This is just one example though.

Besides it works differently for everyone :D.
