I here its an extreme game that takes huge amounts of patience and discipline and takes years and years to actually experience. Now that you suggest it though I can understand why it might be the perfect roleplay environment. Lots of lore and storyline, forced grouping, very old game so theres probably well established roleplay guilds and such.
It seems perfect and I probably could find a guild and group of people interested in taking it slow and easy. I will definitely check this out! I never before even considered it but now that you guys suggest it, FFXI might be MY game. :KS

if your on the Gilgamesh server hit me up ill help you out
My wife and I just recently quit FFXI; myself after 3 years of playing, and my wife had played since US PC release in Oct 03 (5+ years).
This game is very hardcore, it can be very fun, and thrilling entirely.
The thing to remember is that a game is not a job, and nobody should ever make you feel like it.
You can select which server you go to now, and I was on the Quetzalcoatl server - a good bunch of people, but like with any game, there are your share of rude/obnoxious folks. Steer clear of them and the elitists and you'd have a lot of fun.

Guild Wars is awesome, I love the fact that I don' have to play a monthly fee and right now they are having a Buy One Get one half off sale at the NCsoft Store.
I love Guild Wars. Much more casual, free minus the cost of the licenses, extensive, and updated regularly.
