Grrr... MMORPGs

I downloaded the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes trial, and despite the bugs its actually an amazing RP game for actual RP. It has a horribly inactive forum though, and that is a major turnoff for me.

I downloaded PlaneShift *tried* making a character, and i must say that the menu system before you even play the game is AWFUL.

Anyways, what is a great expansive RP oriented mmorpg (i dont care if its pay or not pay) that isnt WoW, Vanguard, or Planeshift....? And it doesnt matter if it is compatible with linux but thats a plus.

hmm I love all of your suggestions but i was looking for something a little less animeish and more western rpg dungeons and dragons like

Mana World looked promising, but the game world seems a bit small and the screenshot on the front page has a player named LEG0LAS in it so im not sure about it...

Then you should maybe browse the game company's sites themselves.

Guild Wars?

One thing you should have known. PlaneShift is ALPHA! Not even beta. The game is horrible but I am active within it. Give it some time. It will grow

Yeah, on planeshift, I played it once as a tech demo. Back when there was a command called "/unstick", which you had to type in order to teleport out of collision issues. It was hilarious. I once watched a helmet, just an ordinary helmet, move up the side of a hill, and into the sky. The game's come a long way, just give it time. As far as MMO's go, SilkRoad is a lot of fun, I must admit, and runs fantastically on WINE. Also, RuneScape can definitely be RP based. There's a few worlds for that, just don't go trying to get intimate.

I was always of the opinion that Two Moons was a good free mmorpg.

2moons looks overhaul for my graphics card.

You can try Wahammer online i heard it was hell to get working in wine tho.

I think that Age of Conan is the only decent MMORPG out there, simply because the structure of the quests and the quality of the writing is so far ahead of any other online RPG, and the combat system is actually engaging rather than being a boring click-fest a-la WoW. Not sure if it's good for RP though... I think that has more to do with the other players than the game in a lot of ways, and, well, I just don't think that it's something that most players of ANY game are any good at.

ya sadly thats true, but some games are a lot more friendly to hardcore RP'ers and facilitate that sort of gameplay.

Final Fantasy XI is an amazing game with much more depth and story than all the grindfest MMO's like WoW, Lineage II, etc. The story and backgrounds of all the races is very RP friendly and there's almost no solo questing so there's plenty of room to RP, though I rarely see anyone actually role playing but I'm sure there's role playing linkshells. One thing to keep in mind though is it's vastly different from any MMORPG you've probably ever played. It's similar to a real FF game in that there's no NPCs with questionmarks over their heads giving out quests or anything. You have to explore and talk to people to get quests and find out new parts of the story. It'll take quite a while for you to get used to it. Just go into it with an open mind and realise it's not a hack 'n slash grindfest (It's definitely a grindfest but in a different way that's actually kind of fun) and you'll probably enjoy it. Since you're running linux you're probably already pretty open minded. The people over at www.ffxionline.com are really helpful and willing to help you get started.

Also, I highly recommend you pick up a controller with a similar layout to a playstation controller. The game's controls were designed for a playstation controller making a keyboard and mouse very awkward and cumbersome. Some people do just fine with a keyboard and mouse but I've met many people who quit playing because they didn't realise how much easier and natural the game plays using a controller.

I'm interested in a game with a relatively large community other than WoW. (I've played WoW for 2 years)

An Xbox 360 controller should be fine. Any controller with a similar layout with 2 joysticks will work. The only problem I can foresee is the trigger buttons instead of traditional shoulder buttons because, depending on your class, you're going to be moving through menus and targeting party members very quickly in battle. Personally I can't stand triggers on a controller but if you're used to the controller already you'll probably be fine.

yes in deed it would. I played on the ps2 and then the xbox360 consols themselves. Both button layouts are exactly the same.

you need a controller with 2 joysticks, 1 d-pad, start&select,4 sholder buttons, and 4 buttons on the face

The Mana World is a Free Open Source MMORPG licensed under the GPL made by various contributors. It runs on (Ubuntu) Linux, Windows, Open & FreeBSD, and Mac.

You can install it on Intrepid Ibex by typing:

sudo apt-get install tmw

You can install it on Hardy Heron by following the guide that the link in my signature goes to.

Wow, I have always been half interested in FFXI and half scared to death. I here its an extreme game that takes huge amounts of patience and discipline and takes years and years to actually experience. Now that you suggest it though I can understand why it might be the perfect roleplay environment. Lots of lore and storyline, forced grouping, very old game so theres probably well established roleplay guilds and such.

It seems perfect and I probably could find a guild and group of people interested in taking it slow and easy. I will definitely check this out! I never before even considered it but now that you guys suggest it, FFXI might be MY game. :KS

Works on Wine & Cedega, though I use Crossover Games to play it as it looks the best on my hardware.

Although very different from most other MMORPG's puzzle pirates has a java client which works natively on linux. Course the MMO I'm interested in is myst online which is being open sourced. Not only should this allow myst online to have linux ports but depending on the license used for it the server/client system might make a good core for a WoW-ish open source MMORPG.

Second Life has a number of RP sims. Toxian is a realy stunning looking futuristic one, bit dark and moody ^^ Avavilion is a medieval one, elves and dwarfs and dragons and such. Although not levelling and massively expansive, they are there for roleplayer's. As such, people roleplay there, rather than level grind and pretend to be a roleplay game.

Second life is not totaly filled with dirty minded boob obsessed nutters ^^

Lol while if you choose to level every job in the game it could take a bit of your time, you will have fun forever after lvl 10, its easy to lvl in the game, also the bonus of EXP rings and lvl sync, the game takes no time at all to level.

Guild Wars is awesome, I love the fact that I don' have to play a monthly fee and right now they are having a Buy One Get one half off sale at the NCsoft Store.

Try Perfect World (There are different translated versions, all are full complete editions). It is closer to WoW than anything I've seen. It works well on Ubuntu 8.04LTS.

Update: Might give Lynch King a try. I'm not too familiar with WoW. But the schemes are similar is what I meant to say.

It is not similar to wow, as i can see you play wow for 1-2 hrs max.

If you like reading, there's a ton of MUDs out there, a lot of 'em centered around roleplaying. Some even enforce it. :o

lol. I've played WoW for a few minutes with a friends account and that's about as far as I've gone....and a few minor details.

I did a lot of mudding in past and the best one for my taste was http://www.aardwolf.com/. I highly recommend it.

Nope, I have it running through Wine. I'm on a dual boot setup with XP Pro too. So I ran them in both. Works fine in Wine and no issues. But I did talk to a player in Perfect World who was running it on Mint Linux, and he said his cursor wasn't showing up on occasion. That was the only issue I've heard with PW on a Linux OS. But I bet it'll boil down to how compatible your hardware is to your software.

My wife and I just recently quit FFXI; myself after 3 years of playing, and my wife had played since US PC release in Oct 03 (5+ years).

This game is very hardcore, it can be very fun, and thrilling entirely.

The thing to remember is that a game is not a job, and nobody should ever make you feel like it.

You can select which server you go to now, and I was on the Quetzalcoatl server - a good bunch of people, but like with any game, there are your share of rude/obnoxious folks. Steer clear of them and the elitists and you'd have a lot of fun.

I love Guild Wars. Much more casual, free minus the cost of the licenses, extensive, and updated regularly.

I personally think that MMO and RPG are somewhat mutually exclusive. You can have an MMO, you can have an RPG, but putting the two together one or the other aspect will be destroyed. Besides, the RPG portion of most MMOs refers to the mechanics of P&P RPGs which have been codified, not actual acting in a role.

I second Regnum Online! They now have an english server and they keep updating things all the time. It feels good to be part of a game that has a native linux version and is FREE and is growing! Try it out..

On the MUD side, there's a site, rpmud.net, specifically for "roleplay intensive" MUDs. Sounds like that might be what some of the people in this thread are looking for.
