Dell Demension 2400

I have an old Dell Demension 2400 in pretty good condition. I want to make it my Ubuntu box and go wireless with it. Is the newest version of Ubuntu going to be what I'm looking for, or is their an Ubuntu version specifically geared toward Dell computers I need? Thanks.

Hi there, I think the latest version of Ubuntu 8.10 should work fine, provided you have at least 512mb of ram. I am running 8.10 on a much older Dell than yours. :)

Wireless is hit or miss, so I'd suggest finding out exactly what kind of wireless card you have and using the search function to find a how-to.

You can test things out from the Live CD to see if you like it, and that all hardware is supported, before actually installing to your hard drive.

Thanks for the help. Since I'm not a geek and wouldn't know how to troubleshoot a wireless issue and have only wireless home access, I'll check the compatability and figure out something else for connectivity.

You can just burn a Live CD and test your wireless from the live mode (without installing). It might just work right out of the box. :) If not, there are several different methods to troubleshoot, but it depends completely on what type of card it is. Worst case scenario is you find the Windows driver for your card and use a program called 'ndiswrapper' to use the Windows driver. We were all new to Linux at one point or another, so don't worry about asking lots of questions. But I am optimistic it will just work for you with no tweaking...

Okay, well I'm in the process of upgrading to 512 mg Ram and don't have a wireless card in it yet. Probably should have stated that from the beginning. What would be a compatable wireless card to purchase or is there information somewhere that will give me some idea what kind to purchase. Thanks

If I were you. I would install 8.04, I upgraded to 8.10 on a Dell 2400 and lost ability to run Compiz which worked fine on Dell from Feisty through Hardy.

As for a wireless card, the Edimax is a nice one with the mini antenna.

PS go with one gig of ram, 512 is too little IMO.

BTW, this is the card I was talking about, there are almost 900 reviews for it so it can not be that bad, plus many people did not give reviews like myself.
