New to Ubuntu

Read about it every few months in Smart computing mag. Decided to look at Ubuntu yesterday. Downloaded it onto a DVD but, also ordered the CD.

I have two hard drives on my current computer, a 40 and 80gb. The 40 is not hooked up and sits there as a spare in case the 80 dies.

I thought I would switch my wires and hook up the 40 and see if the download takes, It does have XP on it currently.

Any tips about getting Ubuntu onto it?

By the way, I am in the process of installing a 640gb hard drive and will be putting both XP and Ubuntu on it if I like what I see on the 40gb drive.

with the HDD you wish to save disconnected boot the live CD and click install [takes a few moments for the first screen to appear] do the Q&A and for the partition select "use entire drive". this will wipe your old drive and install Ubuntu.

armandh's idea for leaving the 80gig disconnected is a good one while you are installing so you don't accidently wipe your data. The install itself is pretty straighforward and depending on your hardware setup, you should be good to go as soon as it's done.

In reference to you installing the new HD and doing a dual-boot, it is recommended that you install Windows first and then Ubuntu. Windows has issues with being installed second and it's quite easy to get the dual-boot set once both OS's are installed.
