packard bell owners be aware

I love Ubuntu I use it on all of my computers and even try to work with it on my laptop. My journey started about seven months ago with my packard bell laptop, I installed 8.04 which went alright, my first problem was the login resolution then after I randomly typed my user and password I got in. I was met with a 800x600 resolution no battery monitor and no wireless. Seven months later the only issue solved so far (sort of) is the screen resolution but after the kernel upgrade my laptop has decided it no longer wants to allow my USB wifi hub to start. So now I'm left with no choice but install Windows XP. This isn't what I want. I use Ubuntu on all of my computers and this switch is going to be worse than my initial switch to Linux.

Anyway the moral of the story is if you plan to use your packard bell laptop with any Linux distro your in for one hell of a mess.

My first PC was a packard bell.........that was 15 years ago or more. I am surprised your ole PB laptop still works. Thanks for the info.

My first PC was a Tandy...didn't even have Windows on that...but the next one was a Packard Bell 66Mhz CPU, 32MB RAM. I remember my dad buying 16MB RAM sticks for it.

Ah, the good old days. That old PC wouldn't even play an mp3 without skipping...didn't have the CPU speed. :P

And look how far we've come.... :)

I'm just wondering what other distros besides ubuntu you may have tried?

All distros don't have the same hardware support. Have you tried pclinuxos or pclinuxos gnome edition on there yet? suse? Mandriva? fedora core? freespire? zenwalk? There are a number out there and if one doesn't work nicely with your hardware, I've found that often times another might...

suse didn't work well at all, I will have a look at pclinuxos.

You don't have to reinstall Windows XP. Try several distros and you may find one that works well with your hardware. Personally I have had great success with Fedora and openSUSE although Ubuntu has usually worked great for me (with the exception being wireless where other distros seem to be better out of the box).

Trust me, I've tried a few distros including openSUSE and I've had no success.

Tried both and same results.
