[SOLVED] My partners looking for a KDE distro

The brief history! Shes started Linux with Kubuntu. Had an epic amount of problems, and due to the smaller forums Kubuntu has didnt get enough help. When she posted on Ubuntu forums and looked on the wikis, she had to translate to KDE at times. This left a nasty taste in her mouth. She wants to be using something that has its own, decent sized community that can realy help straight up with KDE problems. Its nobodys faults, she loved Kubuntu for turning her to linux ^^. This has however left her with... Well i guess 'Linux community dependency problems' ^^

She then went to Mandriva. Mandriva 2008 was good and stable, big community, got all the help she wanted, great. Then AdamWill got sacked. She immediately went looking for a new distro. Shes currently using Mint (Gnome). This isnt a distro of choice for her. KDE questions dont go unawnserd but they of course not as responsive to her as the big Mandriva community. So shes on the lookout.

What she wants is a KDE based distro, preferably a decent community size / responsiveness. She liked having everything (codec wise) pre installed with Mint, so bloaty things arnt much of a problem (as long as they don't cane performance). She also likes to stick with one distro. She realy doesnt distro hop at all.

So are there any KDE fans here than can give a few suggestions for her to try? :p

Mint has a KDE community edition. The KDE edition for Mint 6 "Felicia" is not ready yet, so she may have to wait a bit.

I also recommend Mepis. It's also Debian-based and is one of the more user-friendly distributions I have tried. It uses KDE by default.

PCLinuxOS, but only when the new 2009 release is out. Also, +1 for MEPIS.

With Kubuntu did she ever try KubuntuForums.net? When I used Kubuntu I too got tired of translating responses from Gnome to KDE and found that site quite helpful. Also I'd recommend either Sidux or PCLinuxOS as good KDE distros. I'm not too sure how well their communities are but I guess that is good because neither have given me problems that require me to find out.

Remember she can come here with questions related to Linux Mint. Pretty much any advice anyone gives here about Ubuntu can be applied to Mint too.

both of those are really excellent! I'm using Mepis now,...but Mint is just really nice,...(and as has been mentioned) with Mint you can get help here on the Ubuntu forum. ):P

MEPIS or Pardus

Slackware is my favorite KDE distro, but it doesn't sound right for her.

+1 for MEPIS and Mint personally i would go for Mint because it's pretty easy to use and looks wonderful :)

Mepis - it's pretty darn good. Easy and loaded with the various multimedia stuff already.

I use sidux, but can't recommend it in this case, just apt for a package manager and you've got to install yourself all the multimedia codecs, etc.

Thanks for the replys guys! Mint KDE isnt something shes going to go for. The whole sort of 'sub distro' means shes going to end up feeling the same with Mint KDE as she did with Kubuntu.

Mepis is what she thinks she will try next. Possibly followed by PClinuxOS. Pardus is something neither of us have ever looked at before. I think the live CD requires further inspection ^^

Quicky last question, has anyone tried Sabayon? We see its Gentoo based, that doesnt seem to bother her. In all honesty when i tried Gentoo it realy felt like i was putting in the same few commands all the time, so its realy not very hard.

I personally use Pardus, a very underrated distro; great integration, codecs included by default, detected my hardware when I used it. :)

For Pardus, I suggest you look at http://worldforum.pardus-linux.nl/index.php - it's the main English user forums. (Pardus began as Turkish project, the distro itself supports both English/Turkish though, no worries there).

As for Mepis - agreeing its also a good distro. Debian based, so alot of what you know will be relevant there.

I would recommend Mepis first. +1 Super easy to install and use. Very active community focused on KDE, etc.

Thanks for the replys guys! Shes going to grab a copy of Mepis and Pardus. Shes more keen on Mepis as it seems a bigger project community wise :) Thanks agains!

Just to add my $.2s worth,....... I find Mepis to be really nice! It's my main OS now (along with Puppy),..but I also am wanting to try out Pardus. The thing about the Turkish government sanctioning it (being behind it) makes it pretty creditable IMO. I must try it veeeerrrry soon.
