not so polished 8.10

Hi all,

this is my linux experience, try mandrake year ago (6, 6.0) and guess what couldn't get networking/internet going ... so waited year and then heard about the ubuntu! But guess what, Wifi came around so had to do ndiswrapper and wpasupplicant ... and make a install process document to ensure rebuild of system worked ... then on 8.04 and got 3 mobile wifi BB and guess what b****ed as not supported. so 8.10 great supports wifi, infact my vista which use to work no longer works, but ubunut 8.10 works, aka this post. But B** me if the themes is 8.10 are sh as ever second reboot set them icon and colors back to debian ... rubbish. stop selling so much merchanised and get the OS right!

ubuntu fan thinking of check out other distros, have checkout many but spent 6 months travelling since, maybe ubuntu has lost the plot, please don't turn into microsoft aka vista!

You are always best to use whatever works best for you. If that's Ubuntu, great. If it's another distro...great. If it's back to Windows Vista...great, as long as you're using what makes you happy. :)

Try Linux Mint. Version 6 (Felicia) was released 2 days ago, and it seems very polished. Maybe it's what you're looking for.

Thanks. I was all indignant when I read your first reply. I was like, "Hey! My post wasn't defensive rubbish!" :P

If Ubuntu is your choice, then I wish you all the best in getting it fixed to your liking. I don't know much about themes, but keep in mind that Google is a great thing, and sometimes it is a better search engine for the forums than the forum search is. :)

I seriously doubt this is simply about changing a theme (could be). I noticed that many extremely hostile posting are an indicative of ineptitude. However, this is way beyond that. Especially, when considering all the available information on changing themes. Here and on Google.

One thing that does bother me is the fact that the mod removed a number of responses but allowed "unco" to use a derogatory term when responding (tools) and his remained. I personally, found that ODD.

Just out of curiosity, and at the risk of being considered rude...

Did you buy any of the Ubuntu merchandise? A t-shirt or jacket? Honestly, just curious.

I've wondered how many usrs who've enjoyed an OS have contributed financially by buying merchandise, or sending a donation.

And yes, it's really too bad that so many equipment manufacturers aren't doing a better job providing drivers etc.

Well in all fairness (and I must admit I did *not* see the removed posts before they were removed) I have to say two things:

1. "Tool" is pretty mild, compared to some of the stuff I've seen on the forums in the past.

1. A majority of the posts *were* rude and uncalled for.

Sure, the OP could be trolling, or maybe he likes to post a pissy thread like that and get a laugh out of everyone getting all huffy and angry and badmouthing him.

Nobody can know his motivations, or his level of intelligence, dedication, or self control. Nobody can make him feel stupid, or make him stay with Ubuntu, or make him do anything else.

All that is in our control is how *we respond* to such posts, and I think the rude posts the OP received are just as bad as the one he posted.

My .02 anyway. As for moderators and removing posts...well, it's their world, right? Again, we can't control what they do. Complaining about it doesn't really do any good either. All we can do is accept that we have no power to make a moderator do anything, and move on.

Don't misunderstand, I wasn't complaining, As stated I simply found it "odd". With regards to the severity of the words (including tool), since I didn't view the other offending posts - I can not comment.

nice debate over rudeness and motives, but my motive is simple, I leave my ubuntu computer on for a few hours and the theme changes all by itself, never noticed that in previous versions, hence 'not so polished 8.10'. Polish being what you see! This behaviour is very annoying when it happens everyday and using the Appearance/themes dialog doesn't cause a lasting affect. Interesting that to date this has been the only info anyone has given regarding themes changing, rather than the whole lot of aside opinions ...

The merchandise remarks are simple pointing out that focus is moving away from delivering an OS to making money ... (not really) I wonder how long before ubuntu is going to charge for the OS ... anyway. Anyway have no problem with people buying merchandise either.

Mandrake was tried 6 years ago at least ... not last year, sorry ...

Forgot to mention the live USB stick install thing is cool as doing this manually was a very repetitive process every time I got a new stick or a new six monthly release came out.

Nice that when someone has a differing experience or opinion to yours, there intelligence ends up being questioned.

That is what the report button is for as I was busy else where.

As I stated - I simply found it odd. I know where the report button is and had no desire to report anything. If you were busy or chose not to delete a post, it was your decision. I was not passing judgment or arguing, it was just a simple statement with respect to my personal confusion regarding the decision. As indicated in my "2 Days Ago 12:07 AM", I couldn't comment regarding any of the other offending posts either, as I never read them.
