Hi everybody,

I just installed (2 min ago) Ubuntu on my laptop and the first thing I always do when installing Ubuntu is changing the background image and the theme.

To be honest: It is not friendly.

The first thing you see when running the machine is this brown thing...

If you compare with other distros: Some Mac Wallpapers Even: Vista

Please: don't take this personal. Its a marketing deal. Windows shows nature, some beautiful water elements. With this if somebody is walking near the computer you hear a: "look, that's beautiful". Mac has its power on the design.

I just say that if you see Ubuntu for the first time, you should see something not that aggressive.

Glad to hear your opinions...

Chris

The common consensus in the many threads on the forum discussing this, is that you either like it, or you don't, and if you don't, just change it.

#3

you can always change it if you want its not that hard, but i agree the background that comes with it isn't very appealing.

This is one of those things that has been beaten to death.

The answer in the end has always been wait for the next version, maybe it will improve.

After doing some superficial reading I got to this:

Down-to-Earth: Brown is a natural, down-to-earth neutral colour. It is found in earth, wood, and stone.

Nature of Brown: Brown is a warm neutral colour that can stimulate the appetite. It is found extensively in nature in both living and non-living materials. Culture of Brown: Brown represents wholesomeness and earthiness. While it might be considered a little on the dull side, it also represents steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, dependability, and health. Although blue is the typical corporate colour, UPS (United Parcel Service) has built their business around the dependability associated with brown. Using Brown: The colour brown and its lighter cousins in tan, taupe, beige, or cream make excellent backgrounds helping accompanying colours appear richer, brighter. Use brown to convey a feeling of warmth, honesty, and wholesomeness. Although found in nature year-round, brown is often considered a fall and winter colour. It is more casual than black. Source

So maybe its not that bad...

If you look at this: Poll about brown human theme you see that 23% are against it, but 25% actually like it and another 20% are more neutral...

I don't know if this numbers are positive numbers... In my opinion are nicer modern commercial look would make Ubuntu more popular.

linux always gives you the basic and lets you develop to give the best

I like the alternate version of the default desktop image. Looks like it was an earlier version. Its flipped horizontally and has a lot more colour. Personally I really like it, as has everyone looking at my desktop.
