As I have a canon i250 and I'd much prefer ripping my eye-teeth out than to try any longer in order to get it to work correctly under linux/ubuntu.
I'd like a printer of similar price/quality and have also heard that hp printers are well supported (is this correct??)

Lots of us have had success with HP products, even the inexpensive all-in-one variety. I have a PSC1210 that works both for printing and scanning. Others have had the same experience with other models in the same line.

And I can also print to HP printer, LaserJet 4200, over the network so HP is your best bet here...
Most printers should work with GNU/Linux...but I have heard that problem with Cannon printers not always working. Ubuntu has excellent HP support.

In my experience some HP Deskjets work better on Linux than they do on Windows 9x family. The Laserjets work very well too. It's a pity that Canon are reluctant to support as their machines work best under Windows in my tropical climate, Epsons die of head blockage in no time here in Malaysia
Using Samsung ML-1510 on Breezy (5.10). Ubuntu auto-detects everything :)
I have had three HP printers, all of which functioned right off the bat, no tweaking. Hell, even in windows I had to install drivers. Under breezy, I never installed a things, and it just installed it's own HP specific printing system for me. (I now have a deskjet 5650, by the way.)

The HPs seem to be well supported. When I plugged my HP6213 in I was actually dreading trying to make the printer/scanner work. To my suprise it worked just fine =D>
I would like to echo previous sentiments by stating that you will have great success with HP printers. HP printer drivers are included with Ubuntu and it is easy as pie to set up a new printer.
I have personally tested Ubuntu with the following Hewlett-Packard printers:
HP LaserJet 1010 works fine here. Epson Stylus Photo 750 works fine as well.
These are the printers I've used with Ubuntu (Warty, Breezy, not Hoary yet)
Samsung ML-1740 Epson R200 Canon i960, i850, s820, BJC2200 HP PCS750, 5750, 8100.
The HP's have the best output in Ubuntu for me. The Samsung laser works just as well in Linux as in Windows. I was 100% unsatisfied with the Epson support, even when I compiled the newest versions of Gimp Print. I did manage to get it to print on CDs, but the quality was horrible.
The Canon printers *worked* but I used a paid driver.
My vote would be for just about any HP printer. HP also makes Linux printer drivers, and they even have information on their website.

The best I could manage with the i250 was for it to print a testpage fine, though the colours were wrong. Then when printing anything else through any app the printing would start from halfway to two-thirds down the page. I'll leave it for windows and get a HP printer for my main Ubuntu box
