Through a curious turn of events, I have landed myself this job where I edit OCRs of scans of elementary school textbooks to be placed on a website (apelslice.com) for learning-disabled children to access so they can use reading software so the books are read to them as they follow the text. I've began to play around with the accesability software available on Ubuntu and seriously, it's helping me build up a case for the company to switch to some form of Linux from Windows. Yes, they're based on Windows...
Here's a bit more of background... Once a book has been scanned and zoned, the text is converted to .rtf, and then all the nonsense is manually edited out of the scan into readable text (e.g. *rnac~erel* becomes *mackerel*). Then the .rtf file is converted to .html for inclusion on the website. Here's where the testimony comes in:
Using MS Word on Windows, they would convert an .rtf to .html and then spend hours editing out "garbage code" so reading software could operate properly. One day I used Abiword to make a similar conversion, and guess what??? No garbage code!! It is now cheaper for them to pay me to convert 100 files in the same amount of time it takes them to do one.
