*.deb gone bad synaptic and apt-get problem

I have a .deb that synaptic says Isn't installed or installable and I can't remove it because apt-get states it's not installed or installable-can someone tell me where apt-get/synaptic and alien download the deb file to so I can delete it or how to purge from avaliable packages

/var/cache/apt/archives

thanks bizarrely it wasn't there as a deb file I resolved the issue by altering version sightly and using a slightly different alien command-spose I should have expected it installing an rpm with alien
