[OT] Cable sea-cuts broadband may be slow

Hi all, Slightly off-topic but people around the world may experience a little lower broadband speeds due to another round of cuts in the undersea cable.

France Telecom said the causes of the cut, which is located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia, on sections linking Sicily to Egypt, remain unclear.

Traffic from Europe to Algeria and Tunisia is not affected, but traffic from Europe to the Near East and Asia is interrupted to a greater or lesser extent . France Telecom estimated the following impact on the voice traffic (in percentage of out of service capacity):

France Telecom has issued mobilization orders to two cable repair ships. Priority will be given to the recovery of the Sea Me We4 cable, then on the Sea Me We3. By December 25th, Sea Me We4 could be operating. By December 31st, the situation should be back to normal. "around the world" ? i think mostly middle-east/asians will be affected... europeans, americans, far east etc probably have good local mirrors and wont be affect at all :D

Then how come my wireless broad band (aka data card) is working perfectly well. Different technology ?

traffic's probably being routed via the other side of the country thru chennai/singapore and your data card is slow enough for you to not notice :D even my bsnl dsl 512k is working decently but not its usual optimal self. waiting for monday when the business users cause slowdown for the home users.

Why couldn't they do the same with my Tata Inidicom WiMax connection ? I have been out of connection for close to 48 hours now !

To do so, your ISP , in this case Tata Indicom should have made alternative arrangements "in case a link goes down".

These sort of backup agreements have to be done between ISP's but that's upto the individual ISP to whether or not to enter into such an agreement.

In fact there was a move from nixi http://nixi.in/ to have peering arrangements but due to one reason or other it just didn't take of India otherwise domestic traffic would have improved a lot.
