Whose idea was it to archive old forums?

Who idea was it to archive old forums? And why?

I cannot tell you the amount of times I get applicable posts about my questions but then I get the annoying message above and I am unable to continue the post.

Could somebody please explain to me why you have archived post from this year (two thousand and eight)?!

why don't you instead just point to the post, and tell everyone what your problem is. Sounds like a much more efficient way of fixing something.

lol. Because it's a waste of time hyperlinking around if the information is right there in front of you and someone has already taken the trouble to document the problem. How exactly do you find it efficient pointing to another link?

Thanks. I'm sure I'm not the only person that finds this a pain but at least now I know what happened. Is it documented what happened? If I was running this forum I wouldn't want to close posts that could be useful.

Comparing the number of users and complaints due to this I think most people don't find this a pain :)

All the older posts pre-date the Hardy Heron release. While many can still apply, it is still better to start new threads if searching didn't solve your problem, rather than necroposting in old ones.

I beg your pardon, but the old forums are very accessible through the Advanced Search. I've found things from two thousand and four(2004). *From any page in the forum*, the button that takes you to the Advanced Search is between New Posts and Quick Links on the top right side of the page, near your username.

Once you are in the Advanced Search, the place where you decide which forums to search is on the bottom right, you can hold down Control on your keyboard while clicking the mouse in order to select multiple forums to search. And you can scroll down in the same box to find more forums to select. (Don't forget to answer the "Random Question" before hitting the Search button).

The search also has options to search by *tag, desktop system, a particular user's posts, or posts with a particular number of replies; you can also organize them by threads or posts*, and it looks like you can use the dropdown menu on the bottom left to find posts from up to a year ago. (*To put this in different words*, you wouldn't always need to select forums from the archives in the forum selection box on the bottom right, although I've always used the forum selection box out of *personal preference*).

I think the op was refering to the fact that they could not reply to a archive thread. :) But a good little howto :)

Sorry that it was off-topic. But continuing with eugenevdm's question about not being able to reply to old posts, I made an observation. While the Ubuntu Forums Code of Conduct states that users should "not cross post, or post the same thing in multiple locations," I don't believe it says anything about *paraphrasing*.

Although I do not fully understand the Creative Commons thing, I looked it up after seeing "*Public forum data is released under the **Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License*," at the bottom of the Code of Conduct. Even though Ubuntu Forums retains the right to make their rules stricter by disallowing the "Share" portion of the license, the "Remix" portion remains, as long as there is Attribution, and the Forums "sort of" allows this with the "Quote" feature.

In short, eugenevdm should be able to *paraphrase old forums*, despite that Ubuntu Forums has posted that the Forums are using an older version of the Creative Commons License.
