I have shied away from Ubuntu and have instead used Kubuntu in part because I can not abide the disgusting color scheme of Ubuntu. I have always been curious why the flagship distribution of the Ubuntu series is so damned ugly.

Im in the same position as you... I dislike the brown/orange colour scheme so much i will be going to linux mint on xmas. Mint is basically ubuntu with a different menu and theme (with codecs installed by default) I really like ubuntu but no matter how hard i search on gnome-look it still looks ugly.
There's no accounting for taste. The beauty is that you can change it in any way you like.
Find your favorite picture and upload it as your background, play with the transparency so that your picture is always behind your panels and windows. Then, if you don't like the colors you only have yourself to blame.
Personally, I prefer the color scheme to that of Kubuntu. I find the color scheme comforting after spending any time in Windows.
It's all about taste, and as for Gnome-Look, while there are lots of nice themes there, you don't HAVE TO have a ready made theme. Change the theme to what you like.

you don't have to change distros to get a different theme. you can make gnome look like anything you want. www.gnome-look.org is a good place to start. by right clicking your desktop>change desktop background, you could have changed everything to blue theme. then add your own wallpaper. you didn't know that?
I actually find the default Ubuntu theme and wallpaper artistic. It is artistic because it captures my attention; it is intriguing, interesting, and makes me think about the meaning. It is much more artistic than the blue sky theme that other OSs and distros use.
I grow tired of themes and wallpapers after a time. It doesn't matter what OS or distro I am using. I change them whenever I want.

Also, think about the origin of the word "Ubuntu", then look at the colours used in African Tribal art. You may find that Australian Aboriginal art and American Indian art use the same brown, orange, and yellow colours. That is what they had to work with at the time. They didn't discover cobalt. Modern versions of their art do include colours that were not originally available to them.
You do know you can get the theme from Linux Mint and put it into Ubuntu, right?
Right now on both my computers I've got a theme called "White?" installed. It's orange and white, sorta like Ubuntu, but it's a pretty theme.
A theme suggestion: search at gnomelook for "shiki" theme. It's fantastic theme with four color schemes: orange, red, green and blue, a combination of light and dark themes. You may try also Slickness if you like dark themes, or Dust which is very nice too.
Beside that, you may add a picture (or a small sample, transparent, semi-transparent or opaque for additional effects) as background of your panels too (right click on panel > Properties > Background). The possibilities are limitless. But changing distro because of theme...hmmm...

With all the available themes and ease of installation, complaining about a theme seems petty to me. I'm much more concerned about functionality and available programs that improve and assure my computing experience.

I actually like the brown and orange!
I've never really liked the default Ubuntu color scheme, so I always download some themes from gnome-look.org and use those instead.

Everytime I try to install this theme (at least the way that articles says to), I get an error:
blubuntu-look: Depends: blubuntu-theme but it is not going to be installed
So, I try to install blubuntu-theme and it says:
blubuntu-theme: Depends: gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks but it is not going to be installed
I try to install gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks, but it wants to uninstall ubuntu-desktop. Won't that un-install my OS? I'm not a huge fan of the brown and orange look, and as nice as blubuntu looks, it doesn't seem worth the fuss.
