DARU3 Silent Mode (what is it?)

So I've got a DARU3 and one of the hardware keys is labeled 'silent mode' in the system documentation. When pressed it toggles the fan speed (from audible to barely audible when running), but I've yet to find any real info on what it does, specifically. i.e. , does it throttle back the hardware so that less waste heat is produced (and hence the slower fan speed), or is it solely a fan toggle?

I have a Pangolin Performance which also has the "silent mode" key. I think the only reference in the user's manual, which is Windows-oriented, says that this key "Toggle *Silent Mode (for power saving)" and "*" says "When Enabled, Silent Mode will reduce fan noise and save power consumption. Note this may reduce computer performance". Probably you may check your User's Guide. Cheers!
