i have a question about the rules we have here.

Adult Content/Violence/Illegal Activity: Messages containing sexually oriented/violent/_illegal dialogue_, images, content, or links to these things will be deleted. Messages with links to or suggesting illegal activity will also be deleted. Posting or linking to any of these could result in a ban.

the laws of what nation must not be violated? every nations laws must be followed? where the poster resides? etc

for example:

hi, im from china/saudi arabia/UAE/etc and would like help using a proxy to bypass my nation's internet censorship. can you help me?

as opposed to:

hi, can someone teach me how to use a proxy?

and,

hi, i'd like to set up a blog so i can freely express myself and be critical of my government. i live in north korea. can you help me?

vs

hi, can someone help me set up a blog?

and what is "*illegal dialog*"? i don't believe i've ever heard that term used in an international sense before.

i understand the fine line that must be walked: if ubuntuforums.org becomes blacklisted because it is a 'breeding ground' for revolution or something, that will not hurt ubuntu or FOSS in general.... on the other hand, if all of [pick your dictator]'s rules are enforced, that will _also _hurt ubuntu and FOSS.

sooo, yeah. i'd like some clarification before i make a thread asking if there exists a distro specifically intended to be run as a live CD with easy GUI proxy-finding and setup tools in order to avoid internet censorship in some of our less free nations. :guitar:

Love your work. You might want to start here.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent

These methods could apply to 8.10 version of any ubuntu distro (xubuntu might be a good one for lower end/older hardware) but best experiment. You could try compiling a kernel with just the packages you need and the kernel also, though this is a bit more complex and would be a learning curve if you're up to it. That would be one way of creating a version specific to your exact needs using existing open source software packages.

Good luck and have a look on distro watch, do a google search for 'open source distibutions distros' or somethings along those lines.

Another appoach might be to search for packages specific to your needs on an existing install in 'Applications->add/remove' and synaptic package manager, customise that install removing the packages you won't need, then work out how to get that onto a usb dongle. There will be a way.

You could also use AptOnCD to save your packages to usb or cd.

The second link points out something interesting about this method of booting (persistent from USB) not being particularly secure so you have a bit of research ahead of you.

Ubuntu Forums is the Official face of Ubuntu and Canonical. Anything done here reflects on Ubuntu and Canonical.

Ubuntu is a good international citizen and wishes to remain so. Therefore UF must respect all laws.

Ubuntu Forums wishes to reach all Ubuntu uses, if actions here causes UF to become black listed them we cannot meet our target.

thank you for the answer. i am not seeking debate, just the official answers.

any guidance on how you and your mods would/should deal with the specific examples i provided?

its hard to give a blanket answer , Its best to deal with issues on a case by case bases.

Best thing to do is if in doubt ask here and Admins can look at it and give an answer.
