Best OS (dont just have put downs give GOOD reasons)

Right now i have a mac os x with parallels,windows xp, and Linux ubuntu and i am making a request that people tell me what their favorite os is and make a good reason not just *<snip>* reasons.

Your set up sounds pretty nice I am thinking of buying a new Macbook and doing the same thing.

There is no "best OS", only OSes which work best for _you_. The OS that works best for me is Arch Linux, as it can be customized very easily due to it giving you only a minimal setup at the beginning, is very easy to install and learn how to use, and because pacman (the package manager) is incredibly powerful and easy to package for.

For me the best is Debian Lenny/Ubuntu/Red Hat.

Quick to set up, and all my hardware is recognized out of the box.

I agree with this.

I think Gentoo suits me fine because it's customizable.

I used to think Debian, or any Debian based distro, was the best simply because of it's package management and modularity, now that I'm using Arch I think those beliefs are gone. But I think that the 'best' OS title goes to both Linux and OS X.

Linux: It's free/open, multitude of choices, community, flexibility, the list goes on.

OS X: The eye candy, some of the tools, and way everything blends in makes it my 2nd choice.

I'm debating between linux ubuntu and mac OS X because the mac has alot of really usful programs and can dual boot windows or linux but linux is just so dang easy to use but im fairly new to linux so im still learning but windows is mostley my gaming system besides that windows crashes on everything possible

I'm gonna do the same: the 3 OSes in one computer. I love linux, but i can't stay indifferent about MAC OS X...and windows? Well i can't get rid off it, cause of games and most of all work...i have a lot of applications that i need for work and they are only available for windows, so i have to stick with it. But the hard drives nowadays are so big, that you can have all three in one, using like four partitions: 1 for each OS and a big one for your data, to be accessible to all.

Kubuntu 8.10 avec KDE 4.2 beta because it has excellent multimedia apps as standard and excellent repos (amaroK, K3B, k9copy), KMess is a nice app too and it actually launches my kde3 apps unlike mandriva

I got rid of windows now some time ago.

For me, the best was Ubuntu until Mint came to me..

At this moment, for me, the best OS is Sidux. It's got new packages, is very stable and built on Debian.

Linux in general because it is free and their are tons of free software available, but if you want specifics.

Arch Linux for my laptop and Ubuntu for my desktops works best for me. Arch is a small customizable Linux OS that I can customize for my low spec laptop and Ubuntu because I wanted an easy Linux OS for my family to use. Mac OSX would be my next choice.

Right now,..it's Linux Mint and Puppy 4.1 for me. That's because I have two PIII computers (good ones,..but not the latest, or greatest). So the two Linux distros work for me. Got w2k Pro sp4,..but only use it once, and a while. Going to try Dreamlinux on another hard drive soon,.........(OSX-like),... Linux is the best for my needs,...works great on older hardware.

I love Ubuntu for the family. You can lock it down so the kids can only use what you want and its easy for them to use. I also love wine, cedega and crossover but you can get them on most distro's.

OSX looks nice and is easy to use but its costly and a waste of resources. When you buy a mac it is fast but thats because they have so much hardware. If you were to put a lightweight OS it would go even faster.

It all depends on what you want and need. Some people use busy box because its so small. Some people make there own OS.

Mac OS X, because it just works, and is very intuitive. (Yes, I know the first argument's down to the fact that Apple controls both the hardware AND the software, but it still works.) It's also incredibly fully-featured.

It's difficult to choose a second best, and so far I'd say Ubuntu is ahead in simplicity, with Fedora a close third. I haven't used Windows 7 yet, so I shall refrain from judgement until public beta time and I can beat it into running inside a VM.
