Currently KDE 4.2 is about 34 days before its release, my expectations are not that high about it but I am still willing to try it out once it hits stable. I think that possibly KDE 4.2 can take up the spot that both KDE 4.0 and 4.1 have failed me on, and that is being stable and reliable. But I look at stuff like this with cautious optimism as I dont like being let down. Now I am hoping this wont turn into a debate on KDE vs Gnome vs XFCE vs LXDE vs openbox vs fluxbox etc as this topic is more about thoughts and feelings on the next KDE. Now yes there already is a bunch of KDE 4 topics but none of them are really like this one. This is about taking the time to gather some thoughts on what you think about KDE 4's future in the form of KDE 4.2, are you hopeful, have a careful optimism like me or if you feel KDE 4 will never live up to its promise.

I'm using the Beta and it's a lot better than 4.1, I can't say there's anything spectacular about it, but there's a LOT of small improvements.
KDE 4.2 rules. Forget any previous grieveances you had against it and give it another go in January. It's much, much better than it was even a month ago.
Based on what they've done for 4.2, can't wait to see what they do for 4.3.
I compare the transition from KDE3.5.x to KDE4.x.x to Britney Spears:
3.5 = Loveable early 2000's innocent schoolgirl Britney.
4.x = Insane bald-headed smoking Britney.
You could also say that Plasma = K-Fed, nobody wants/likes that!
But seriously i am not really looking forward to 4.2, my next KDE experience will probably be the Kubuntu Jaunty live CD to check up on KDE. And since KDE4 came out i have become obsessed with GNOME, so its okay.
Very sceptical. I am still running 8.04 because I don't want to run a beta de and I suspect that 4.2 is still very much beta. When it settles down and becomes usable they will probably scrap it and start again.
I actually installed ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop as gnome seems to be a better choice for reliability and to be a more professionally run project. However, I do still want to use some kde apps but they have been so badly packaged that they pull in virtually all of kde anyway.
You know, I don't use KDE. Originally because i was more drawn to gnome when i was choosing an ubuntu version, and once joining the community, because of all the bad press in terms of stability.
After visiting the site multiple times and looking at KDE in action i suppose that a desktop environment as ambitious as KDE will be buggy for a while. It seems to be headed in the right direction though, and i hope KDE users will get the stability they yearn because it really is a great environment.
Also i want to use chakra.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgradeI recommend that people try the 2nd Beta. It is a vast improvement over 4.1. 4.2 might actually settle me on KDE. It is shaping up quite nicely after a poor start to the series.
You'll probably need better specs for it though in fairness.
I use it on a daily basis, as my main desktop environment. It's great.
I have experienced a few stability problems, mainly with Plasma, but I've actually been pleasantly surprised at how well it handles crashes in certain parts of the system. It does *not* take down the whole X session with it -- in fact, none of the subsystem crashes I've seen have actually done anything other than reload that subsystem.

Ditto, I've been using Beta2 since it came out-and could only be slightly happier overall. For Beta-ware, it's in a (very) good state, judging by how well it runs with my box....the few problems I'm running into are due to sluggish updating of the QT4 version in the *buntu repos.
While KDE 4.2 is finally supposed to be the one that end-users are allowed to use, I'm too dissapointed in it already as a project to care about.

I am greatly anticipating it, though I have never tried 4.2, I have heard nothing but good from users who have.

I'll try it, have an opensuse kde vm here. But so far, I was less than impressed by their usability work, and seems to be a "toy from developers for developers to play with". Not for end-users to seriously use and be productive on. I don't see that goal changing for kde 4.2, but I'll try it out, I hear they fixed a lot of bugs.
I simply don't see a reason to switch when my productivity will be impaired by poor design decisions.
I believe the guys has fixed more than 10000 bugs since feature freeze. Unless you have crap video drivers, I believe KDE 4.2 will be a very stable and usable release.

It frequently excites me with how smart and shiny it looks, then I use it and go straight back to GNOME. I suspect though that that is due more to my own habits as a user than any real drawbacks to KDE, I've tested it quite a bit and found it to be pretty stable and very pretty looking.
I voted for the second option of the poll, but upon further thought I'd say I like tacos quite a lot better, especially when they've got a heap of meat, cheese and BBQ sauce. And of course, crisp few slices of tomato and lettuce on top of that provide the potential catalyst for tastebudgasm.
I don't like KDE, so for me is tacos :tongue:
I'm totally looking forward to it, I was using LXDE but I had that little voice in the back of my head saying to go back to KDE4, I like it a lot. I've fought hard to make my Nvidia card perform well under 4.1.3 and I think I've done it. I hope KDE fixes some minor problems and maybe add more features to it.
