Hi,

I have a tutorial on the Ubuntu Forums that deals with the installation of the subversion MPlayer and a full codec pack from the MPlayer website:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558538

This tutorial has been in place for quite some time and I can say quite honestly the thought had not occurred to me that the use of this codec pack might be against the rules of the forum.

Could someone have a look at this and tell me if any changes need to be made? I am more than happy to alter the guide as required and I apologise for not having thought of this matter earlier.

All the best,

Andrew Strong

Since this is not a real resolution center problem, I will respond rather than waiting for an admin.

If your tutorial was against forum policy, we would never have allowed it to begin with. There is nothing wrong with compiling programs from source or direct from unofficial repositories, it's just not the suggested method for most people. You gave notice that the guide is for installing a pre-release version and is for advanced users, which is adequate. If you are still worried, you may just want to add something like "This guide is not the official way to install mplayer/gmplayer in Ubuntu because it is not installing precompiled and packaged software from the official Ubuntu repositories." You are certainly welcome to make your case about why you prefer your method. Cheers.
