Closing threads after 1 or 2 years is completely stupid

Closing threads automatically after 1 or 2 years is stupid. It creates new threads for nothing.

I mean why closing thread if the topic is interesting, and the thread remained unsolved. I don't see the point to close them. There is more than one thread like that, a bunch actually.

I think he means when people bump a two year old thread it get's instantly closed and the poster told to make a new thread.

Why having duplicate threads then ? How can u find information in a big mess, then? I know a 2 years old thread... it's pretty old, and hasnt to be there; or still, it could be useful ?:(

I think it should greatly depend on the content of the thread.

For example, if it is a thread about a bug in a program, and a solution is not found to that bug for more than a few months, then posting a solution to the bug should not be cause to close the thread. There are probably more users besides the OP that are interested in that bugfix.

A user using the search feature is more likely going to be searching for the problem, not the solution. They want to find a thread where someone is experiencing the same problem as them in hopes that the solution will be in the replies. They aren't going to be searching for a thread where the solution is given upfront and then everyone comments on the solution. That'd be a waste of webspace.

However, if it is a thread about something random like "Ubuntu is brown," then it makes sense to close the thread after two years if all the comments consist of "I agree, Ubuntu is brown" or "I don't like brown." If a user seriously finds it necessary to dig up a "Ubuntu is brown" thread that's been dead for two years just to post "I like brown" then the user has too much time on his/her hands.

Because the information may be outdated. There's no use to a thread describing installing this particular version of software two years ago. Or discussing an issue with outdated information. Replying to them now may not even help at all.

I cant speak to your concerns in a general basis. The decision to close threads due to some content being outdated would have to be on a case by case basis.

I have found threads only a few months old that are already in the archive and can't be replied to. Stupid indeed.
