Sorry to bother, but I cannot find the information I'm looking for by doing a search and it really seems that it's a basic enough facet of the forums that it ought to be plain for me, but it's not.

I ran across a post in the Xubuntu area (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=48) and I wanted to do a "thanks." Others have done so, clearly, but no little "thanks." button is showing up in the corner of the post.

Under what circumstances can members be thanked or not?

Feedback would be to update the Ubuntu Forum FAQ to discuss the issue of "Thanks," as it doesn't seem to at the moment, and this is such a great way to encourage solid, friendly, helpful writing and authors ... Don't you agree?

Also, perhaps have that FAQ edited to be a bit less pros-y and more bullet=point-ish. Huge blocks of text seem ... troublesome if I want an answer to a question (hooray for Firefox quicksearch, though.)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks p_quarles for the link to the guide. From there I found the actual post at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=702596. That clears up the primary issue very well.

I will address the second issue, that of the "thanks" info being included in another post, in another thread.

If you would just thank me for everyone of my posts that you run across, I think that would just about cover it for you :)

Um... thank you? :)
