Hello, I am trying to configure an external monitor attached to the ati card of my T43p running Kubuntu 5.10. I really gave up trying to set up a clone mode with two different resolutions, but what I would really have is to start KDE with the native resolution of the external monitor (1280x1024), but having the possibility to switch to 1400x1050. If I put both resolutions in my xorg.conf file, what I get is a not-better-recognizable resolution sold as 1400x1050 (but where the desktop is bigger on both screens), even if I put 1280x1024 as default resolution. The only way to get 1280x1024 is to put it alone or to switch to it after KDE boot up.

Any idea why is this happening? Any help would be really appreciated. Thx!

Here follows my xorg.conf =====

modules, this line instructs the server to load the specified driver

module. Even when not using loadable driver modules, this line

indicates which driver should interpret the information in this section.

The BusID line is used to specify which of possibly multiple devices

this section is intended for. When this line isn't present, a device

section can only match up with the primary video device. For PCI

devices a line like the following could be used. This line should not

normally be included unless there is more than one video device

installed.

I don't use dual monitors myself, but im sure that both monitors need to be listed in the monitor section (one as moniter0 & the other as moniter1). I also think that in the device section you need to add another device list as the card has 2 sockets so each get treated as a seperate device.

#3

How do I refer to the internal and to the external monitor? How is it possible for Xorg to distinguish them?

#4

try this (from CUCPSC_Geek from linuxquestions.org :

First under Section "Monitor" you need to add the second or third display:

You'll want to add a section like this

Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter connector 1" Driver "fglrx" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=4e50 Screen 1 EndSection

After all that, you'll next want to add the info into the screen sections

Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes

the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section

may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"

option.

Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "ATI Graphics Adapter connector 0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 #Option "backingstore"

Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024@60" ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop

Virtual 1280 1024

EndSubSection EndSection

Now all that's left to do is edit the ServerLayout Section

Screen "Screen0" Screen "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"

Now you should be able to use dual monitors at different resolutions, with different instances of KDE on each monitor, while being able to traverse each screen with your mouse

Thank you for your reply... updating my xorg.conf file leads to a crash (even no more Ctrl+Alt+F1 possible). Below come the last lines of the relative log file. I can read what the error is, but I do not understand why... Any suggestions? Thank you very much again...

Hard lockups are always hardware problems...a software driver shouldn't be able to do that.

That being said, I think your best bet is to post at the Rage3D forum. I personally haven't had any luck changing resolutions without restarting my X session.

Got it running (reinstalled drivers). I have still a question: is it possible to tell X to switch off the internal screen and use only the external one? How? Thxs again....
