Now, I need a real expert answer on this.

If you have a dual core processor with a speed of 2.0ghz, is it:

A. each core is running at 2.0ghz, giving you a total of 4.0ghz B. each core is running at 1.0ghz, giving you a total of 2.0ghz C. each core is not clocked but the whole processor gives you 2.0ghz power

or if you could explain it in better way. in easy to understand way (layman's terms). reference links/websites also are needed.

(Why do I need this? I want to know the truth! And also for some basic computer tutorials I will be doing.)

P.S. This is not Ubuntu specific question, but I know people here are "knowledgeable".

Is it safe to say that statement (A) will be the correct statement(A. each core is running at 2.0ghz, giving you a total of 4.0ghz). Or should we say it "virtually" runs each core at 2.0ghz?

It depends on the software, some, maybe even most programs will not use multi cores, at least not yet.

Of your 3 options, I'd say "A" is more accurate than the others.

IMO, It is the technology that determines if it is 4 GHZ or 2GHZ. If you are running a x64 bit OS and software, and they are both optimised, then yes, it should run like 4.0 GHZ.:):o:D:KS

Depende sa gamit mo. If you're running Photoshop, playing music, downloading a movie and playing WoW all at the same time, mas mabilis talaga if you're using a multi core processor. Pero if you're just doing one task, dun ka nalang sa mas mabilis na single core.

It's more like 2 running at 2ghz, seperate of each other. Some software might be able to utilize that better, to make it 4ghz, but not a lot can.

Think of it like this, a 4ghz machine is one car, that is rated to pull a weight of 2X, and is actually pulling a weight of 2X.

A dual core is when you have 2 cars each rated to pull a weight of X. They can work together to pull the weight of 2X if the people who made the weight put 2 towing hooks on it, your 2 cars can pull it just as well as the 4ghz car.

The dual core is better when you have 2 different weights. If you try to pull 2 weights with the 4ghz car, you can only have 1 weight connected to the 4ghz car at a time, even if the weight is only X.

Your 2 cars can beat the 4ghz car since the 4ghz constantly switches between the two weights, and the 2 cars just each pull one weight, no switching.

So long as they made the program/weight to support 2 cores/cars, it works just as well with one program, but is better for multiple programs than a single core.

IIRC I remember AMD was working on doing something in hardware to make the multiple cores act as one, but haven't heard about it for a while.

with regards to AMD working on something to make multiple cores act as one, they called it reverse hyper-threading.. But as it turned out, it's not real (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060713-7263.html)..
