What do you think the approach to the Jaunty theme should be?

Opinion seems to be divided on the subject. I was just interested to see where the general consensus was?

Well, it really depends on how much the community helps out in creating and polishing community created themes as to if we get a new theme. It looks like New Wave may get it (it really has improved recently :)). We won't get a new color scheme, though, since by now brown is Ubuntu's brand.

I vote keep the branding we have, we can't accomplice anything major in the remaining Jaunty timeframe and we still lack a lot of underlying technology before we can do a real overhaul.

We can naturally continue to offer alternative themes in the community package but I think throwing away the branding we have now for minor experimentation would be a mistake. A move like that needs to be planned and it needs a roadmap with milestone goals we can hit with each release to get to a point where we want to be.

I believe a new look should go beyond a new theme, it should encompass everything, and it should be done as much as possible upstream or the process with drown us in work. Now is a good time to start the underlying work, look at what we need to go into the GNOME3 stack, what kernel and driver work we need.

Realize it will be a multiyear project to get right, one that will require major investments but also one that will bring Linux as a whole to a much nicer place. It is not about how Linux looks, it's about how Linux feels and works.

I am starting to disagree now that NewWave is coming along. It has become really nice the last couple of releases (and this was from a once dust fan). :D

Well I feel 'radical overhaul' is vague. Do you just mean a change in pallete or do you even mean changing how the panels and menus are set up?

Slightly off topic, but, I was looking at openSUSE and I like how both the GNOME and KDE versions go together. They both had the same theme, looking similar (though GNOME has one panel), but I do like the consistency.

Kubuntu just seems like Ubuntu with "oh uh... yeah let's just tack on the default KDE".

So I'd like for whatever theme we get (which I'm still convince won't happen until GNOME 3.0), the same or similar theme gets ported to Kubuntu as well.
