Master Volume Control Impotent

The volume and mute buttons on my keyboard work. The problem is that they operate the master volume which has no effect on the actual volume, which is controlled by the PCM volume.

I'm running Kubuntu Breezy 64-bit on an ASRock motherboard. The onboard audio is described as AC97 5.1 and I have the ac97_codec and the via82cxxx_audio modules active. Sound is good. It's just that I have to use the PCM volume controller and I would like to be able to use the buttons on my keyboard.

How can I either get the master volume to work or get my keyboard to manipulate the PCM volume?

Same problem here, with regular Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 9300.

My keyboard also acts the same way in Ubuntu as it does in Kubuntu. I guess you and I are the only ones to see this problem, kwaanens.

I've got the same problem. I've seen a few people link to howtos that just make the k/b controls work PCM volume instead of Master volume, but that seems a bit bandaid to me, and most of the links appeared to be dead.

Guess I'll be using the volume knob on my speakers then. *sigh* It's a hard life.
