what do you mean by small window? or is it a tray icon, if its a tray icon its pretty normal,,,but if you want to remove it, you must manually remove it from apt-get or synaptic...

Welcome to Ubuntu. I would keep it as it tells you the state of your network connections - wireless or wired (internet).
