Ubuntu run slow: iBook 500 Mhz, 128 MB RAM

I have Hoary installed and everything is working the way I want. My concern is though, is that it runs very slow when I surf with Mozilla. Also, my file browser (natalius?) is not working too fast.

Over all, some speed would be nice.

I have gnome/GTK 2 right now, and I have tried to use a not so heavy theme.

More RAM would probably be the best solution but in wait for that, how could I improve the speed of the computer?

Any suggestions, tweaks or/and tips will be greatly appreciated!

If your not too set on using gnome, you could try the XFCE desktop (or maybe it's xcfe, I always get it confused :) It using a whole lot less resources than gnome. One drawback, though, is that you can't have files on the desktop. You have to run programs from the menu. I had an old computer I put Ubuntu on for my in-laws and gnome would make simply crawl. With Xfce it is very usable. You can download it through Synaptic and choose it at login under sessions. Hope this helps, BabaFree

I did this with a very excellent result. I just used synaptic and downloaded and installed xfce4. Only thing that was a little bit disturbing was that during the installation, I had to insert my Ubuntu PPC-install disc in the cd-rom in order for it to get some files from there (what files, I do not know) but except for that, the whole thing took me about 10 minutes.

I do still have some things to take care of, but over all, it's running more smooth now.
