Fixing Windows from Linux?

I was hoping I could get some information about trying to fix window vista with my friends Live Ubuntu disc.

Window vista will not start up at all. My computer is a HP Pavilion a6130n. It will not boot up into safe mode either. I've tried everything I can think of. My buddy said that it might be fixable with a Ubuntu CD. Is there a link someone could give me for some guidance. Or could anyone walk me through the process. Is this the correct steps that I need to take?

if it won't even boot into safe mode, just what is it you think the ubuntu cd will do for you? please provide some details about the problem you're having with windows. what did you do to it?

what exactly happens when you boot windows? if it starts to boot at least then its not a problem with the MBR so not much Ubuntu is going to do to help you out.

My computer did an automatic update and hasn't worked since. I don't personally know a lot about Ubuntu so I'd figure I would come to this forums for some kind of guidance. I was curious if Ubuntu can even fix my problem

What other information do you need and I will do my best to provide you the answers.

I would have to say probably not going to do much good. You might need to look for assistance on this from MS. when you say it won't even boot into safe mode, how far does it boot?

First it goes to the usual screen after a windows OS fails to start. Repair launch screen (recommended) or start windows normally. Then it goes to the Windows Vista Screen with the little loading bar below. then it goes to a black screen and thats it.

sounds like MS did its usual fine job of making sure an update was ready to be rolled out. Nothing Ubuntu (or any distro) is going to do to help you out here (unless you just wipe out windows and install *nix)

Thanks for the quick response and information Halitech. I know this is a little off subject but if i was able to download a live recovery disc from a friend computer would that fix my problem?

the only thing you'd be able to do with the live cd is to perhaps recover your data. the live cd can not help you fix your windows install.

Agreed, unless it's something with the MBR (at which point installing GRUB will fix it) the only thing linux will help you with is salvaging his data files so you can reinstall windows.

Okay hold on I know how to fix this problem before I got rid of vista and put xp on my laptop.

Go here and get this recovery disc and use the repair boot up option.

This disc should cure any start up problem you are currently having, if this disc does not fix your problem, then you might have to reinstall vista.

Or if you have a Vista install disk you can put that in, make sure that the bios is set to boot from CD first, and do a system restore to a point before the problem occurred. You should be able to fix this without wiping everything, that's the last resort. When I did a system restore from the disk it takes you through the motions of re-installing, but before you actually do the re-install you have the option to system restore.
