Most Linux users agree that NVIDIA has the better cards for Linux and ATI is not so good at Linux support. But why? Well think about it like this companies like Dreamworks use Linux for making animations. Now NVIDIA sees money hear and NVIDIA does closed drivers can I say that word again, closed. Now why would that be why can't people go and make and improve on them drivers. I know why because if NVIDIA is the only person for support of there cards under Linux then NVIDIA is the only one to blame and therefore people go to NVIDIA. Now ATI likes to support all computers. I mean NVIDIA only started supporting Mac because they was money in it and the same goes for Linux. Really they LOVE Windows and LOVE making people use it. But if there is a big heap of cash somewhere else they LOVE to take it. I advise you not to buy NVIDIA cards because ATI have much better cards and Intel have much cheaper cards. I hate it when compiz goes all funny because of the NVIDIA cards.
NVIDIA is in it for the money.

Intel/ATI/AMD/Nvidia are in it for the money, ofcourse they are thats why they run a business.
Nvidia has always developed better OpenGL, Linux is on alot of workstation for 3D(CG) with use their cards. It's a know fact even on Windows that nvidia rule performance in OpenGL, Windows drivers are far from perfect as well.
This is ridiculous. What's wrong with making money? Did you know that NVIDIA is not a charity organization but a commercial company? And lastly, they do have good support for Linux, so what's wrong with that?
I have nice suggestion for you. Given the outrageous discovery your thread reveals, switch to vesa and don't bug the community with such nonsense.
Of COURSE they are-that is what businesses do-make money.
Your choice:
-Buy Nvidia card for Linux, use good drivers.
-Buy ATi card for Linux, have drivers that are the equivalent of someone who completed their homework 2 minutes before class.
Really, this is a Hurd People mindset-sacrificing functionality for ideals. Yes Nvidia may be abusing its market position--but for most of us, myself included-have GREAT luck running Nvidia cards on Linux...and nightmares trying to futz with ATi's joke-of-a-linux-driver.
And FYI-ATi makes GREAT cards. And for MANY LONG years their drivers for ALL platforms were JOKES. As in "why do I gouge my eyeballs out???" kind of joke. FINALLY their windows drivers have become good if not great--their Linux driver is a childs' joke in comparison in terms of level of development.
2nd FYI-Nvidia makes good cards, and GREAT drivers. This is a win win. It is no good buying great cards with drivers written by Torvalds' proverbial Room Full of Monkeys Typing on GNU Emacs.

Nvidia supported the Macintosh line before ATi did. Nvidia GeForce 2 MX was supported on the development PowerPC platform (Rhapsody) before ATi entered the Apple game. The Quake demo, played by Jobs, at the ADC was run on a GeForce 4 inside of an Apple PowerMac G4.
They did it for the money, as do all companies, but they didn't just start a year ago, they've been doing it for nearly a decade.
Of course they are. NVIDIA is a for-profit corporation. My complaint with them is the way they gradually stop caring about customers with older cards. The "correct" drivers haven't worked with my card for over six months, and they haven't done anything despite my emails.
Unsure why, but I want to join the chorus of people who agree NVIDIA is in it for the money and find that fine.
PS I work at a job for money so I guess I am bias.
PPS NVIDIA needs to open up the specs on its video cards or release FLOSS drivers.
holy tomatoes! a business thats in business to make money! whoever heard of such ridiculousness!
I'll say it until I'm blue in the face...
NVIDIA makes better drivers, but not really better hardware than ATi. If you look at the performance lifecycle of ATi Hardware, lastgen cards with matured drivers usually do almost as well as current-gen NVidia cards with current-gen drivers. I seen the performance numbers many, many times. If ATi can figure out how to turn around quality drivers for their hardware with relevant timing, Linux users would be singing a different tune about ATi.
And to echo everyone else: DUH! Of course they're in it for the money! ;)
I think I'll open a business and give everything away for free. Yeah, then ask congress for a bailout.
lol
Matrox FTW

Be sure to ask them to cover the airfare to and from DC.
look at AMD/ATI nowadays, fully releasing their newest GPU specs to the OSC. R600/700 series released as well. nvidia still closed. AMD/ATI also offering their own drivers that are much better vs just ATI days.
ATI destroyed nvidia with their HD 4000 series in my jestful opinion :).

If only their linux drivers were worth the cost of my lunch...let alone the cost of their silicon.
I think the troll is full now...

Their drivers have and still do work fine for me.
Vince4Amy said: Their drivers have and still do work fine for me.
They work-so long as you don't aren't doing anything in Wine which needs anything more than DirectX7 or so. I never had luck getting any of the HL2 games to run well under Wine with an ATi card.
But just about all the advanced functionality of the windows drivers has been stripped out for the linux driver. All the ATi linux driver gives is AA and Ansiotropic filtering adjusting....IIRC a bit of color adjustment ability, and a tech readout of your card. That is it. Compared to the Win driver which lets you tune and tweak just about every single aspect of the functionality of the card.
I use Nvidia cards cause they work best with Linux. ATI is open and so is Intel yet their drivers are worse then the closed ones. Something tells me open source is too slow a method to make video drivers.
When ATI makes better then Nvidia or Intel does I will use them.

Intel and ATI will have GEM and DRI2 in Jaunty and maybe KMS.
Vince4Amy said: Their drivers have and still do work fine for me.
Well, every time I used an ati card in linux, the drivers just worked. That's all they did, just worked... barely well enough for me.
This guy sounds like conspiracy theorist.
Yes, we know... everyone is in it for the money.
What!? You mean they were just doing it for the money all along? I'm shocked, shocked I say!
NVidia licenses too much Intellectual Property from other companies to open source their drivers.
The OP is thoughtless flame bait.
Slug71 said: Intel and ATI will have GEM and DRI2 in Jaunty and maybe KMS.
I will reserve judgment on Jaunty until I see how it works or doesn't work.
ATI drivers have improved a ton this year. Maybe still not as good as Nvidia but it does show they started caring about Linux support.

Working VERY well so far! Some people are having issues with X and video drivers but we're not even at Alpha-3 yet. I'm very impressed so far.
Have it installed on Ext4 at the moment and rock solid.
Mods should lock this meaningless thread.
Check the sig!!!

its definitly going to make everything click for me im hoping.
i.e. Compiz Fusion/Accelerated HD Playback not to mention some increased performance.
well i didn't read the entire thread but DUH! if a company isn't in it for the money why else would they be in it for

My sister works in the new york school system. She has come across a twin named Barry and Not Barry (I am being very serious) and some poor child named Shi*head, pronounced 'shi-thead' as the parent insists.
So a vehement +1! on the breeding comment. A future with parental licenses may not be a bad thing.
If you don't plan to play games on Linux, go with intel/ATI, but for gamers it is still recommendable to get Nvidia cards. Intel is more or less out of the question, ATI can some, but nothing fancy.
True that ATI driver have improved, but there's still a long way and hope it's sooner than later.
I don't know if anyone remembered when ATI announced that they opening their specs. Everyone went frenzy to get an ATI to play games as people was sure that the drivers would be top notch because the thinking was because the specs now is open a godly driver would be within a year or two. They are still waiting...

Yeah remember that. People don't realise how complex things like video drivers are and because of the complexity things take time.

So Intel processors are better supported that AMD ? I thought it was the other way around. So then it's the Intel display drivers that are the support problem and not the processors ?

He is not talking about Intel or AMD processors, he is referring to Intel GPUs and ATI GPUs.

I'm glad you guys don't run the world. As linux advocates I would think you'd be concerned with concepts as blatantly Orwellian as this.
