Is it the same reason why QWERTY is still the most popular keyboard layout despite the list of drawbacks it has?
- Windows comes preinstalled on most PC's so most don't know you have to pay for it.
- People know how to use Windows already
- It runs their software and hardware.

No, the poster was simply telling that it all depends on CHOICE. Where you can feel comfortable with, with no feeling of being paranoid or whatsoever.
Is coffee better than tea? Yes! (espresso + flavour + caffeine) Are dogs better than cats? Yes! (Mans best friend) Was Hendrix better than Mozart? Yes! (played upside-down, left-handed and at Woodstock need I say more?)

Well, i wouldn't say so, windows is the default OS in most store bought computers, i don't know too many people that has even heard of linux, ubuntu is non-profit, and it won't get as widespread as windows for that reason, most programs and software has windows compatibiblity. All it really is becuase people don't know. If every person knew about ubuntu and knew how good it was, micro$oft would be bankrupt by now.
The only person qualified to judge the superiority of one operating system over another is the user that is behind the wheel of them.
There can be no definitive answer to the question "which operating system is the best?" that can be applied to everyone, because everyone has a different idea of what "the best" means.

Well said. But also it can just be the type of software they use, like flash which does not have an alternative for linux nor does adobe make a linux version.

Off topic here, yeah I know the QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow the typist down and the whole back story... but are any of the original keyboard layouts still available? I mean the ones you can go faster on.

I get yes for all, which means.... Windows is better?
Windows made computers popular for home use.
Windows comes preinstalled on just about every computer in every computer store.
Most people don't know there are other operating systems, let alone on how to install them.
That being said, I don't think Ubuntu (gnu/linux) is a good choice for everyone.

windows is on top because of marketing. linux is behind because it was founded by a college student who had no idea about marketing
Marketing is certainly a good point, but I don't think this is the case anymore. In the beginning windows had the better marketing and people started using it. That time linux was only used by "computer freaks" which in return resulted in normal human beings to resort and stay with windows. Nowadays it is more a case of being afraid that one has to learn a completely new operating system and that it is easier to just stay with what one knows and play it safe. But this is the problem. Ubuntu is, as its name suggest an OS for human beings and not only "freaks". I for one have no idea about programming (although I would love to know how to fix bugs in programs myself) but I can use Ubuntu perfectly sufficient for my purposes. OK I do come across the occasional problem, but I am still learning.
As far as the question is concerned: Ubuntu is better (IMHO). It is free, does pretty much everything that windows does, it is safer (viruses, trojans etc.) and I think not as frustrating to use as windows. Oh and of course there is much better support for Ubuntu...HERE.
Maybe each one of us should convert one person to Ubuntu per year. That might be a good new years resolution.

For the same reasons people use Comic Sans. They prefer it and are used to it. And while choices like these might not make sense to others, they have the right to make their own choices and there's nothing wrong with that.

So... Windows(In the relatively previous versions) like Windows 2000 seems to be better than Ubuntu. It can be the large number and size of files that Ubuntu is using, that's making it harshly slooww... on my laptop but now even windows vista have a big number of files that is making it even slow. The lack of optimisation in both operating systems; it doesn't means that when the technologies are going more and more powerful that the only system that could use them fully should be a 6Ghz processor, 7Gb RAM and 40Gb of disk space. [COLOR="White"]WHAT THE HECK![/COLOR] So... Yes, Windows is better than ubuntu but it depends of both operating system's version.

Isn't that again, a matter of opinion and also a matter of what you are doing? Hosting a web service might be generally deemed better on one than another, while gaming might be deemed better on one than the other. Even if it is true that Ubuntu is far superior to Windows or vice versa, each OS has software that will only work for them, which makes the variables in stating which one is better much more numerous.

1 - Most PC's come bundled and preinstalled with Windows, therefore they have the largest marketshare of desktop computing installations.
2 - Microsoft has a larger marketing budget.
3 - The general public has a lot of misconceptions about Linux.
4 - The general public has a lot of misconceptions about what the open source movement is about.

After years of prodding my brother has finally given in and had Xubuntu put on his laptop after a hd crash and corrupted xp install. I think people dont use linux simply because it seems every pc sold is advertised with Windows installed and they cant seperate the two pc / os. They dont even know that there is anything else out there. They see the flashy adds and PC World 'bargains' and that's it. I dont think some of them can even get to grip with Windows properly. It took me ages to get it thru to my brother that IE was not the 'internet' and only a part of windows. IMHO a large portion of Win users dont understand what they are using and as long as it switches on and connects to the internet they will keep using IE and Outlook and opening themselves up to the viruses targetted at those applications and Windows itself. If Ubuntu made Windows ......... it would work Ubuntu... probably the best distro in the world
