Ubuntu 63bit version?

Okay I love Ubuntu CE.

My only problem is the only version avaliable is 32bit.

For those who don't know 32 bit can usually only get a max of 3.5GB of RAM. 64 bit utilizes more memory.

Thats where I'm stuck.

Does anyone agree with me?

nothing is stuck, you can just install the 32-bit server kernel to have support up to 64G memory.

You can google for some guides on how to install server kernel for ubuntu.

If you really needed 64 bit, you could probably download ubuntu 64 bit, then get all the applications that CE includes.

However, I'm really curious what you need all that extra RAM for.

Either way, there is probably something to get what you want.

Although, i have to agree that it doesn't really make sense that there is no 64 bit version. As far as i know, they practically use everything right from the main ubuntu repo with a few extra programs and themes.

On my desktops, I currently have the following open:

  • e-Sword;
  • Thunderbird;
  • Firefox;
  • OOo;
  • K3B;
  • SQLite;
  • Python
  • Text2DAO;
  • Half a dozen hacking/cracking/decryption/encryption tools on the CLI;

If I could find my Win2K install CD, I'd also be running Win2K in a virtual environment. As it is, I'm running Win95 on another system, to cross check the results from the Linux box with the windows box. I may fire up my DosBox, to do more cross-checking of the data.

(I'm starting to seriously think about taking the source code for the Linux video driver, and rewriting it to run on Windows 95. I can't stand 640x400 8 bit screens any more. Come to think of it, my DrDos 7.0 box displays more colours, in a higher resolution, than that WinBox does.)

We use Ubuntu CE for our projection system and when we install the original version its hard to get DansGuardian.

We have ZionWorx installed for the lyric projection and it works best on 64 bit because of the extra ram. Faster response time on the clicks.

By the way if you do want to use ZionWorx it works perfectly using Wine and dual monitors. Haven't had a single problem.

Sure beats windows and buying a expensive program like SongShow Plus and Easy Worship.

I believe that themes are architecture independent. It depends on if CE uses its own engine, or just uses a standard engine like Murrine.

It turns out the CE themes are not included in the Ubuntu repo as far as I can see, but there should not be a problem getting it to work on Ubuntu.

An interesting idea might be to install 64 bit ubuntu, then add the repo that Ubuntu CE uses, so that the independent packages could be installed. Not sure if that would work or not...
