Hi,
I have seen a few people mention a need for a Solaris forum.
What do the rest of you think about renaming the BSD subforum to something like BSD, Solaris, Unix? Alternatively post your own suggestions for a new name.
It's not like this forum is overflowing with traffic and I think the others would fit in here well.
I don't care. I could deal with it either way.

That is a good idea, see what the mods and admins think though.
I'd say the idea has merit, considering the moderators don't seem to want to create a new forum in this area.

That's the whole idea. Do a poll, see the results and then run it by the staff. They say 'yea or nay'.
Having a designated place to the BSD/Solaris/Unix discussions to be moved would prevent a lot of the threads posted on these topics from being lost in the limbo of the main forum Other OS Talk. I support this idea. As for the name, I'm at a loss...

Aye, since they're so similiar as it is, it doesn't make sense to just go make new forums for them.

I agree. The staff are of the same mindset as they say there are already too many sub forums already so they won't get their own forums.
I think it would be a good idea to have a forum to serve as an umbrella for the various Uxix derivatives. IMHO, it wouldn't make sense to have different sub-forums for each unix os, but at least having the discussions grouped in one place would be a good idea.

But in that case, we'd need to also remove all the subforums about Linux distros and Mac OS, since they are also UNIX-like. Maybe "Other UNIX and UNIX-like"?

That sounds like the best solution proposed so far.

I would say ignore Unix-like which is Linux etc. In the true sense they are not Unix. OSX might be Unix but it is so different from your average Unix that it presents it's own issues. When I say Unix I mean Unix derivatives (Based on real Unix), nothing else.

Actually, I think Mac OS X is the closest thing to real UNIX that you can get.

Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 on the Intel arch is certified pure Unix, while all other OS X versions are Unix-like. Even BSD isn't Unix certified.

True, I just didn't want this to turn into a "I think this system is more *NIX than that system". OS X, Solaris/OpenSolaris, and the BSDs are all some form of *NIX whether they qualify under the SUS or not.
Specifications for trademarks vs. Ancestry. This is a topic of its own, and one with decisions best left to those who would potentially rename this forum.

What I was getting at was that, even though OS X is pure Unix, just like BSD and OpenSolaris, it's design is so much more difference on the interface that it still needs to be seperated.

I agree that it needs to have its own forum. One, because of the reason you have stated; two, because of its own rabid userbase.

Thanks, that is what I meant with my previous post and assumed that is how people would interpret it. I know Leopard has UNIX 03 certification but thats not what I was thinking about when I made my post.

Although they need their own forums, I just don't think the discussions that relate to them happen often enough in the other OS talk for them to get one. I mean, this forum is dead as it is. We have like, what, 4 or 5 OpenSolaris users in this whole board?

You may be surprised. I don't know the exact numbers myself, though. However, having a more "central" location for talk relating to OpenSolaris and the others would keep the threads from being lost in the limbo of the main Other OS Talk sub-forum. This will, IMO, increase the accessibility of this information, and may help promote the systems we're talking about.

I agree with Sorivenul, there definitely needs to be a central location for OpenSolaris related threads since there was a lot of initial interest in it but unfortunately most of the related threads have been buried. Besides if nothing comes out of it does it really matter too much? Half of the sub forums in Other OS Talk are dead anyways and it's not we would be adding another seperate sub forum to contribute to some of the inactivity.

to be completly honest I really Dont know how i feel about placing all unix and unix-likes other than linux under one forum name and that i i would not know how to vote yes or no to since i sort of like bsd having a forum for them self as well as i would love to have a solaris forums all for it self like i once asked and there was not enough to warrant a such forum. i am just of the opinion that each of these systems deserve a forum for them self or else maybe it just should be called just unix forums. but i would hate to steal the bsd users name and subforums for that cause.
but i am thinking about how about a poll on how many of us that in fact uses solaris or open solaris bsd mac and what ever ohter unix and unix like system there in fact is on the forums. the number of users i think would be a interesting enough tread to warrant a poll perhaps.
