Sorry if I'm in the wrong place but I didn't find that place where we can ask for new features. Also I don't know nothing about programming. My suggestion is that the application's version number is visible in 'Add/Remove' programs. Ex.: I've installed 'Subtitle Editor' and found it had a bug, so I went to their homepage and found out that, for two months now, their stable release is 0.30.0. Then I checked the version I had installed through 'Add/Remove' and it was 0.21.1 (!). If the version to be installed was available in the description I could have searched for an alternative, like trying to find out how to install the latest. Thank you very much.

Ubuntu won't do that. They value well tested versions over the latest and greatest. You'd have to update to the latest version of Ubuntu and hope it is packaged.
The version number is visible in Synaptic.

He's not asking to choose the version to be installed, but only to know what version is going to be installed. It's a good idea.

I know what you mean I sometimes get messages like. There is a version in the database when your trying to install a latest version of the same program. Of course that only happens with .deb files.
