MacBook

I'm thinking of getting a MacBook. Has anyone here bought one and what do you think of it?What is the current price(taxes included)?

Is there anything specific that you need a mac for that justifies the cost? If yes, then have at it. If you are going to get it and then just put ubuntu on it and use ubuntu more than why bother with the extra $$. Just my opinion :) Good luck with coming to a decision

i have a macbook. Its a great computer...and great quality. I don't run mac OSX on it tho...i have Ubuntu cause i like it better...LINUX FTW!! Otherwise, its a good computer. Altho i wouldn't have bought it if i didn't get the free ipod touch with it. Right now i think you'd end up spending around $1,500CAD for one...thats including tax. Otherwise, if you aren't going to use all the major features of a mac, i'd save your cash and get a good HP or IBM laptop.

I've got a MacBook 2.1 white unibody (2007) and am very disappointed with it.

After exactly one year the following hardware is crippled:

• body: the top plate including keyboard and trackpad is falling off in thin stripes at the edges. Started some months ago there only existed a complete edge at the display side. was fixed two days before guaranty ended.
• display: was flickering from the beginning for about 15 mins. after boot or reboot. was fixed also.
• harddrive: made some noise for a couple of weeks, apple's local service-team "couldn't recognize any unusual sound", two weeks later the drive crashed hardly with complete data loss. fix after weeks of discussion with the service, finally directly with apple. (got two bills about, and apple the third one)
• memory: first change three weeks before guaranty time ended, second change some weeks later.
• dvd: makes horrible noises. started not ejecting media a few weeks ago, apple service can't find any error (I have to try every media at least 3 times, apple-install-dvd needs about 10 tries). was never fixed.
• keyboard: some keys are making annoying "clicks" if they aren't hit exactly in the middle and the backspace was loose. Keyboard was changed (due to the ripping off stripes on edges), the new one had an unpressable mouse button and was "thrown in the body" like the 2-year old so of my buddy would do a better job. Next (and actual) keyboard has those clicks again - on different keys than before. I'll live with them from now on, my patience ended up.
• cooler: is getting louder and louder, especially at low speed. Started about 4 months ago, he sometimes doesn't let me listen to a dvd without headphones.
• after missing my book several weeks for all this ****** up hardware the service team spoiled the complete body - display hangs over the right side, body at the left.
• and after all my power supply is just gone, the cable is broken exactly after disappearing in the box.

Okay that were my main probs with it. Additionally it sux because of the following:

• display is way to dark. working outside with overcast (? cloudy) isn't possible at all.
• heavy temperature problems: it *has* to stay on a table or notebook cooler, lying on the lap for 5 mins will cause heavy virility problems.
• the graphics adapter sux. 128MB from RAM is a joke. but compiz is running.
• sound is way to quiet, no bass.
• display can't be opened enough, I wish it could have about 10 more degrees in some situations.
• Mac OSX 10.5 needs about 20G on my 120G harddrive. Can't remove it because of firmware updates.
• It is soooooo ugly!

There are many more things I hate about this piece of ... computer but there is a lot I like on the other hand:

• keyboard: aside those problems I really like the feeling while typing. many keys are missing (delete, screen up/down, home, end for example) but linux gives you every option to make a setup you like. so the lack of keys is a feature for me :) never had a keyboard with "faster" layout.
• touchpad: with the right module it is a bit choppy (standard module is much smoother but in comparison with native macOSX both will loose the game) but has really cool features like scrolling with two fingers in every direction, 2/3-finger click, circular scrolling and more.
• plugs are only on the left side. I am right handed so a mouse will never be blocked by cables and stuff. but that feature results in only few plugs, only 2 usb is not the jackpot.

after all my experiences over a year I wanted to take a youtube-vid about rolling over it with a back tyre or so and go and buy a *real* computer. ThinkPad was the next choice. But while I waited in the shop to get served I asked a young guy with a cardbox of a R500 in his arms "you are buying? or what?" he replied that - after three services - he's sick of it and will return this one RIGHT NOW. applause.

But in an intensive talking with the salesman it turned out that there were a lot of huge problems due to unready/missing/buggy drivers under vista. Not my problem it seems...

Apple? never ever ever more. From my personal POV. A computer with 5 different hardware versions over two years is a test site in my opinion, not a 1500 euro notebook.

I have yet to experiance any serious problems.

At times it does start to run pretty hot...but i keep it on a cooling pad. As for graphics, its ok...i only use this for school so i am not too concerned regarding the graphics part of it.

Moved to the OS X area (Apple users is for using Ubuntu on Apple branded hardware ;)).

i was playing with one the other day because i was bored at best buy and the spacing on the keyboard is a little much for my liking and i don't want to sacrifice typing speed for anything. but yeah the thing is super small and sexy. i would buy one if you plan on traveling alot i don't think you could find a laptop with that much horsepower in that form factor.

I bought a Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz one week before. It is a gorgeous machine. Leopard is running smoothly. iPhoto 09 is fantastic. It detects 'face' and sorts photos based on faces and places. Multitouch track pad is excellent. No clicks, no scrolls. Just taps and swipes. Less stress for fingers. Display is very cool.

If you are a student or researcher in Universities, you can buy Mac through its educational store. In UK, I bought it nearly 250£ less than the public price.

If you have money and don't want to explore more in Linux, you can buy Mac. :D

If you purchased this new , then you have abused the heck out of this machine.. not Apples fault. If you purchased used , why did you purchase such an abused unit.. again not Apples fault.

A few points... The Unibodies are the new Aluminum models. The OS does not take up 20gb

Thats the reason why I haven't bought a notebook for 1000 bucks (with mostly the same hardware) or 1300 bucks (with better hardware), that's the reason why I spent 1500 - because I *use* this computer. Thought apples were built for being used in production environment not for just looking cool (while this is a point of view - I think it's terrible ugly) in a yuppie inet cafe. My fault. And I believed that apple has a great customer service. And certified service stations with knowledge. And short response times. Again three times my fault. And I believed that MacOSX is a practicable environment for production. May come true if you spend another 3000 bucks for software. So again, my fault. Why? Because you can read about all my problems in all the mac forums all over the world. May have taken a look there *before* I believe all those "apple is hilarious" talkings. My biggest fault.

But mistakes are made for learning. And I have learned from them: apple? Never again.

If you don't want OSX, you'd be a fool to buy an Apple.

If the Macbook is in the state you claim by the way you use it ,( I admit I doubt your claims) then it is clearly your fault. No Laptop can with stand abuse , they are a precision and complex device. The only models that can are the tough books used by the military.
