I'm curious as to how the Ubuntu software repositories are built up from the source. I've always imagined that the sources are compiled from a bootstrapped version of the default compiler(s) in the release, but I haven't been able to find any solid information on this one way or another.
This all stems from problems that I've had with mixing and matching packages from different machines at different times.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to see how any particular binary package was created (compiler version, etc.), but I've searched high and low on Google and the Ubuntu and Debian sites, but I haven't been able to find much information about this process.
Any pointers to documentation would be very much appreciated.
