Codec issues

I know every first time user of Ubuntu goes through this, just check general help or the Absolute Beginner sections and see who many are having trouble playing this file or that...and don't give me that adding Restricted Drivers crap, I know first hand that does not solve everything. There really should be an easier way to install all the codecs you need, also it should be made much more clearer than it is which files should work after which codec is installed. I also believe this should be apart of Add/Remove.

As to my personal experience, it took me 4 months to install what I have running now and dozens of terminal commands. You know I still have issues.

Which files are you having trouble with? I found that, while using Ubuntu, most codecs were installed automatically when the file was opened.

The same here for the last few releases.

Then why still people still post I can't play this file or that. I just checked and there are at least 3 posts of that nature in the regular section of the forum.

Then there are and explain this...

Why is there a sticky which tells you to play most media files?

Why do seemly everyone post the same command line to install the same codecs?

Why is there Medibuntu?

Also why do on the Medibutu site, in the repository section are there codecs you can directly install?

Also explain why at least 4 times a week people still post they can't play either AVI files or DVDs. After they already installed the restricted file?

Medibuntu contains codecs which Canonical CAN'T redistribute, because it would more than alienate people in the U.S., or may even be illegal in U.K. as well.

The reason that there are some people who post about files is because they use some strange format (ie, my video camera uses a .tov movie format which is only supported by the manufacturer's drivers). Also, this is a forum, so it is logical that people would ask here.

Most AVIs that can't be played have DRM encryption. Same with DVDs. It is illegal in many places to work around it, and that is why only Medibuntu can distribute the required libdvdcss codec for DVDs (I don't know about AVIs with DRM).
