Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the *Karmic Koala*, the
newest member of our alliterative menagerie.
When you are looking for inspiration beyond the looming Jaunty feature freeze, I hope you'll think of the Koala, our official mascot for Ubuntu 9.10. And if you'll bear with me for a minute I'll set the scene for what we hope to achieve in that time.
Server
A good Koala knows how to see the wood for the trees, even when her head is in the clouds. Ubuntu aims to keep free software at the forefront of cloud computing by embracing the API's of Amazon EC2, and making it easy for anybody to setup their own cloud using entirely open tools. We're currently in beta with official Ubuntu base AMI's for use on Amazon EC2. During the Karmic cycle we want to make it easy to deploy applications into the cloud, with ready-to-run appliances or by quickly assembling a custom image. Ubuntu-vmbuilder makes it easy to create a custom AMI today, but a portfolio of standard image profiles will allow easier collaboration between people doing similar things on EC2. Wouldn't it be apt for Ubuntu to make the Amazon jungle as easy to navigate as, say, APT?
What if you want to build an EC2-style cloud of your own? Of all the trees in the wood, a Koala's favourite leaf is Eucalyptus. The Eucalyptus project, from UCSB, enables you to create an EC2-style cloud in your own data center, on your own hardware. It's no coincidence that Eucalyptus has just been uploaded to universe and will be part of Jaunty
dynamically growing and shrinking resource allocations depending on your needs. A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat, and waking up when there's work to be done. No need to drink at the energy fountain when there's nothing going on. If we get all of this right, our Koala will help take the edge off the bear market.
- during the Karmic cycle we expect to make those clouds dance, with
If that sounds rather open and nebulous, then we've hit the sweet spot for cloud computing futurology. Let me invite you to join the server team at UDS in Barcelona, when they'll be defining the exact set of features to ship in October.
Desktop
First impressions count. We're eagerly following the development of kernel mode setting, which promises a smooth and flicker-free startup. We'll consider options like Red Hat's Plymouth, for graphical boot on all the cards that support it. We made a splash years ago with Usplash, but it's time to move to something newer and shinier. So the good news is, boot will be beautiful. The bad news is, you won't have long to appreciate it! It only takes 35 days to make a whole Koala, so we think it should be possible to bring up a stylish desktop much faster. The goal for Jaunty on a netbook is 25 seconds, so let's see how much faster we can get you all the way to a Koala desktop. We're also hoping to deliver a new login experience that complements the graphical boot, and works well for small groups as well as very large installations.
For those of you who can relate to Mini Me, or already have a Dell Mini, the Ubuntu Netbook Edition will be updated to include all the latest technology from Moblin, and tuned to work even better on screens that are vertically challenged. With millions of Linux netbooks out there, we have been learning and adapting usability to make the Koala cuddlier than ever. We also want to ensure that the Netbook Remix installs easily and works brilliantly on all the latest netbook hardware, so consider this a call for testing Ubuntu 9.04 if you're the proud owner of one of these dainty items.
The desktop will have a designer's fingerprints all over it - we're now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the whole new look.
UDS in Barcelona, 25-29 May
As always, the Ubuntu Developer Summit will be jam-packed with ideas, innovations, guests and gurus. It's a wombat and dingbat-free zone, so if you're looking for high-intensity developer discussions, beautiful Barcelona will be the place to rest your opposable thumbs in May. It's where the Ubuntu community, Canonical engineers and partners come together to discuss, debate and design the Karmic Koala. The event is the social and strategic highlight of each release cycle. Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager has more details at http://www.jonobacon.org/2009/02/19/announcing-the-karmic-koala-ubuntu-developer-summit/ including sponsorship for heavily-contributing community members.
More details of the Ubuntu Developer Summit can be found at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDS.
A newborn Koala spends about six months in the family before it heads off into the wild alone. Sounds about perfect for an Ubuntu release plan! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you in Barcelona, and before that, at a Jaunty release party. Till then, cheers.
Mark
Sounds awesome!
I wanted the Killer Kangoroo... :(

I guess I should have started the Kinetic Kiwi campaign months earlier.
Oh my god. I just realized that all of the releases follow in alphabetical order.
Someone move me to /dev/null now... *faceplant*
the cloud API thing is sure to anger some people.

9.1? Is 9.04 even out yet?
Karmic Koala sounds like a porn star

hehe. That's right. Please take a look the the following link:

I'll still always call it Kinky...
At least "Koala" won, though.

That will be great if they shine up the desktop. Appearances really matter, they shouldn't... but they do.

Maybe they'll go with a red and white theme instead of the usual blue?

The "D" in SABDFL stands for dictator you know... :-#
why do they have to force me to learn new words with every single new release?!? Although this one was the easiest so far...

What about ubuntu 9.10 for you then ?
Looks like we don't yet have the obligatory thread about the announced successor to Jaunty. This time's up to KK, so we're going to have a Koala, and a Karmic one! ;-)
The Koala is going green on servers, mostly by supporting "cloud" services like EC2 and Eucalyptus. But I guess what many of use are most interested in is the desktop, so I will quote the relevant section from Mark Shuttleworth's e-mail:

By an accident of history, that same abbreviation also attached to a nationalist revolutionary society in the Philippines: Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Supreme and Most Venerable Society of the Sons of the Nation).
I like the name :)
I liked Kleptomaniacal Kitty better. Aw, well I'm on Arch so it don't matter to me.
I'm gonna love the wallpaper. Probably a Koala eating the Ubuntu Logo. (I really like that idea. If anyone can make/find it please let me know. :D)

Don't worry Hatten. You really don't need to memorize the CodeName for the Ubuntu distro. You can use the official way it is called. Ubuntu version, e.g. Ubuntu 7.10.
Quote from here:
The names of each release (e.g., Breezy Badger, Dapper Drake) are development code names and typically for internal use only. The official version number follows a Y.MM naming scheme (e.g., Version 5.10, Version 6.06). We don't want to use the version numbers prior to the actual release, as it increases the likelihood that a pre-release version will be mistaken for a final release
Another quote:
_The official name of an Ubuntu release is "Ubuntu X.YY" with X representing the year (minus 2000) and YY representing the month of eventual release within in that year._ Ubuntu's first release, made in 2004 October (10th month) was Ubuntu 4.10. Since the actual release date is not known until it's ready and humans tend to prefer names rather than numbers, a set of codenames are used by developers and testers during the buildup to a release:
So Jaunty will not have a new theme.
olskar said: Sounds like it :D:D:D
The great question being-if there is a different Ubuntu/Gnome theme-what will there be for Gnome/Ubuntu users to regularly vent about? ;)
Why "Karmic"? With previous releases, there was often some explanation for the adjective.
"Karmic koala" doesn't make much sense to me.
Loving the new name. With KDE4 good and mature, bits of GNOME 3 (maybe) seeping through, the new theme (!) and the stability that Jaunty will bring, Karmic should be an awesome release.
Looking forward to it. Maybe Jaunty will be the last of the "old" Ubuntu releases. It'll also be interesting to see whether the launch of Karmic will bring more new users than normal. Jaunty will not get much attention by comparison as there's barely anything new.
"Karmic koala" doesn't make much sense to me.
Maybe we'll have an e17 (Enlightenment) version? ;)
BTW, Koalas spend all day just sitting around stoned to the gills on Eucalyptus oil.

I've looked allover the place for the definition of Karmic. The best I could find was "Something full of karma". Is that what it means?

It's not the same old theme! I knew where everything was! They moved it all and I don't know where everything is! 1 n0 10n63r f331 1337! OH NOOOOOES!!!!1!!!11!!
:p ;) :)
but what about USB 2.0 transfers being broken now? do we have to wait until October 09 to get past 1996? i personally cannot wait that long and what really sucks is i actually like this better than Windows for the first time in years....and will we get past 386 and get 486, 586, even 686? other distros are already there!

Yes. :)
And my karma ran over your dogma. :D
Ah. I like the name. even since i found the developer's naming list I've loved the idea of naming the "O" release Ostentatious Osterich (yeah it's a mouthful)
I like the name. So much you can do with Koala designs, too. Can't wait to check out the new theme. I'm not so disappointed to see the brown go. I have everything switched to shades of blue, anyway.

After all the hullabaloo over the brown it would be sad to see Ubuntu go blue and black or blue and grey, as is the expected norm. I'm kinda tired of blue OS'es, as much as i love the colour though.
Anyways, my good old 'Human' will probably be there so i can always switch back or do what i always do and hit up gnome-look and put together my own custom look. :)

I'm all for another brown theme, if the Ubuntu devs would just learn to use more neutral browns and oranges.

How would you ever want to add that to a sources.list without spelling mistakes? There is no spellingchecker in nano!
I really like the new code name, and the announced changes. But all website themes will have to be redone! Prepare, Ubuntuforums staff!

which is why you should use vim!

Um, dropping 686? Heck, that is the earliest 32-bit that Arch supports.
Although I never did understand i386 support for Ubuntu, when Ubuntu clearly wouldn't even run on a 386 processor-much less run well.
In Ubuntu Launchpad, all the developers get a Karma rating in their Bragging Rights statistics.
.
i want to suggest a new name for the next release then. how about "creative canine" and the development version could be called "buggy bunny" :)
I like Koalas, good name choice! :p

Not any more of a mouthful compared to kleptomaniacal kitty. People'd be calling that one "kitty" instead.
For some reason, however, kleptomaniacal is increasingly appealing to me...
RPG Master said: I've looked allover the place for the definition of Karmic. The best I could find was "Something full of karma". Is that what it means?
Yes. Karma refers to the idea, popular in Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, that all actions have equal reactions. Karmic is the adjective derived from that.
Karmic Koala, therefore, doesn't make sense at all. Or am I missing something?
They are finally moving away from the brown thing they have been using.
billgoldberg said: They are finally moving away from the brown thing they have been using.
Well, it's not decided yet if they are going to move away, but it is going to be _discussed_.
Apart from wallpapers, Ubuntu hasn't been brown since Breezy Badger (5.10).
Where is our dear KILLER KUWANGER? :D
IMHO, Karmic Koala is the best Ubuntu name ever. And I suggest, to complete the K sequence, that Karmic Koala uses the KDE desktop by default, abandoning GNOME for good. KDE 4.2 already matches most of Windows 7, and KDE 4.3 will be in Karmic time to face Microsoft.
Compare that with GNOME... we waited 7 years to be able to change colours of our apps, 8 years to be able to format our disks (both features were in Windows 1.0)... let's wait another insane amount of years for a desktop composition engine (sorry guys, but Compiz is not GNOME official window manager, but Metacity, and its composition capabilities aren't beyond a tech preview)
The new Jaunty notification system has to be developed in house by Ubuntu, for GNOME. Compare that with KDE: they have the same system built in. I can continue.
About the Karmic Koala color: green. A dark shade of blueish green, like eucalyptus leaves. OpenSuSE uses a light shade of green, so that won't be a problem.
Good I hate the brown theme.
Karmic KOala sounds good

I am from Australia, and Koalas are one of the least inspiring animals on the planet.
how about we switch the default desktop environment for Ubuntu to KDE and call it Karnivorous Kitteh. It could be the lolKat version too :P
-- For those who lack a sense of humor, please note this comment is in jest.
The names ok IMO, but it does not follow the pattern of having lesser known animals in names. Koalas are quite well known. I think buntu should go green. That would be nice. Also implement more features in koala and make the L LTS release completely stable.
I loves that name ^^
The browns going though?.... After hows long? They are actually getting rid of the brown?......
*has a fit and falls to floor guggling foam from his mouth*
I liked Kinetic Kiwi better. I agree that Karmic Koala is a bad name because the rest of the releases generally make the average person reach for their dictionary / thesaurus. This does not and it's not all that inspiring of a name. Plus the work Karmic can work against Ubuntu if it turns out 9.10 is a bad release -- like a bad joke.
I would like to see the first 10.x release be an LTS though for the sake of Kubuntu. Although there still needs to be a lot of work to make KDE 4.x LTS quality I do think that 4.2 was a major step forward and I will be trying out Jaunty's KDE release.
pt123 said: I am from Australia, and Koalas are one of the least inspiring animals on the planet.
I am from New Zealand, and I hope they don't call a release anything Kiwi.
A kiwi is a bird, that eats roots and leaves.;)
So bottom line, he's a koala!!!
Where I'm from a kiwi is a fruit that on the outside looks like a giant testicle :P
But in all seriousness. Kiwis (the birds) are better than koalas for an Ubuntu release, but Ibex is also a bird so I can see why there would be some reason not to choose it.
I suggest: Karmic Kodkod http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodkod
great name and might I suggest 10.04 be lonely lobster?

Just looking at the desktop, they are going to lift some Fedora 10 features. Then add some rather undescribed "designer fingerprints".
To me that just sounds little tame in terms of plans. At least till it gets clarified some more. It just feels kinda.. stagnant.
We shall see what happens.
I thought the 2.09 KK release was going to include PackageKit, which isn't lifted from Fedora, however Fedora does use it. Right now, PackageKit running on Debian based systems such as Ubuntu I hear is a mess. Hope they can fix things in the coming months.
As for "designer" adjustments, I'm not sure if that's the word you would use to describe the look of Ubuntu :P I like the idea of using warm colours such as red, yellow, orange, and browns -- but I think the current designs should be scraped for something more aesthetic.
gnomeuser said: To me that just sounds little tame in terms of plans. At least till it gets clarified some more. It just feels kinda.. stagnant.
Well it isn't due until October, so what were you expecting? Blueprints and an Alpha?
Also it's actually pretty revolutionary in terms of plans, but if all you're concerned about is the aesthetics and don't care about what's under-the-hood use Windows with WindowBlinds.
I'm a bit fed up of people moaning about the name - it's Karmic Koala, deal with it. It also makes sense given the introduction of the eucalyptus feature. Does a name really put you off an OS?!
There's loads that we know will be in Koala - Plymouth Splash Screen, The new eye-candy laden GDM/login screen, EC2, a new desktop theme, super fast boot time...
Think about it before you start calling it 'tame' - this is a Major Operating System that's really pushing Cloud. OS X and Windows 7 won't be implementing these features as part of their OS's for a while, and if they do it'll likely just be an 'add-on' and not woven into it.
Sorry for the rant, but people can be so unsatisfied.

I know gnomeuser can defend himself and his stance on the "tame" comment; however, I personally agree with him. Oh, and I'm *positive* he cares about what goes on under the hood.
I find the currently available information regarding 9.10 to be a slight let-down. Fedora is well known for being on the forefront of technology, and the fact the Ubuntu will be picking up the pieces almost a year and a half after Fedora implements them is expected. 9.10, then, from that viewpoint is far from revolutionary, it is a delayed repeat, which for a release that is *non-LTS* is a bit of a let-down at this point.
Oh, and when any OS I use pushes further into the "Cloud" than I'm comfortable with, I'll start flipping my own bits with butterflies.
