Sharing Desktop - Idea

I have laptop installed Ubuntu 8.10 with another additional monitor, this allows me to expand my desktop and my productivty.

Question: Can I connect External USB (keyboard & mouse) and use completely as seperate desktop ?

meaning, I have one harware which does behave like 2 seperate computer.

It would be cool feature that if i could have completely 2 different tty running on two different screen.

I know Virtual machine would do this. But point is keyboard/mouse are common to both guest and virutal machine.

With MultiX, you can have both mice working separately, but I don't think there is a solution for the keyboard yet, so no, not at the moment. :(

Unfortunately, all I know about it is that it allows multiple cursors to be used on the same screen (originally made for touchscreens). You'd have to do some googling to figure out how to use it on Ubuntu. :(

Actually, it is doable, not that I have done it. Its not a trivial thing though, and if you get it wrong will mess up your install something rotten, but it can be done:

The normal terminology is multiseat, just google multiseat ubuntu and there are lots of results.

I think you should be able to start two seperate X sessions with each they own xorg.conf and do what you wan't.
