Need to install Hardy on Old Laptop

Guys, I need help po. I have an old Everex stepnote laptop and I want to install Hardy on it and totally remove XP. How can I remove XP and install Hardy? Do I Have to reformat the hard drive of my laptop or just boot on my hardy CD and install it? will it overight my XP?

you can try first loading the live-cd, so you can try the feel of the desktop...also i would recommend using xubuntu hardy (if you have one), its much lighter, because ubuntu requires around more or less 512mb of ram...

as for your application, there are many alternatives, for example, vlc for wmp, rythmbox for musicmatch...

Just the windows/desktop managers and the applications that come with each. Ubuntu: Gnome Kubuntu:KDE Xubuntu:XFCE

I use Xubuntu personally and love it.

Almost everything is the same (though not)... first is the windows manager it uses..

Ubuntu = Gnome , good for mid spec system.. Xubuntu = uses Xfce, good for some old hardware (specially old video card and low mem) Kubuntu = uses KDE, It's a bit more heavy..

for applications, you can actually use applications on different windows manager..

I would suggest go for Xubuntu...

I run Ubuntu Intrepid on a much older system with 256MB of RAM and it is fine.

You will need to use the alternate install though, the liveCD needs more.

What do you mean "use the alternate install"? Sorry I don't get it. All I have is the ISO file that I donwloaded from ubuntu site.

With the live cd, you have to run Ubuntu first (meaning load the window manager - gnome, load some services etc... eating up memory), before you can choose install...

With an alternate install disc,, the system will boot you directly to the install process in a text based install process.. doesn't use much memory so it'll be faster and easier..

look for the alternate installer iso at http://releases.ubuntu.com/

you can just install ubuntu, if it meets your preferences in regards to performance, else install xubuntu-desktop...easy...:D

Ok, Thank you so much. I will try to install hardy on first and check if hardy will run otherwise i'll use Xubuntu.

Have you tried Puppy Linux?
