I was very disappointed when I saw the new ubuntu 8.10 GDM theme. I was hoping that canonical will make ubuntu a good looking distro at last :) but now I'm worried that ubuntu 9.10 will look worse then 8.10 :| I hoped what canonical would make distro as beautiful as openSUSE 11 is :) So I want to know what do you think? What colours should Karmic Koala have? :)

I'd really hate to see them give up on the brown. While I never really liked the existing brown themes, I had confidence that the Ubuntu Art Team could come up with a color palette of subtler browns and tans instead of the overly vibrant orange/brown color scheme they currently have.
I'm not trying to sell my own theme, but I wish the default theme could have the same color scheme as my Macchiato theme: dark and subtle brown mixed with a warm and calm tan. A little gray wouldn't hurt either.
Interesting to see how colour makes such a difference to the user experience. It probably is in the top 3 list of things that can dissuade people from or to a distro.
Take kde4, has a classic colour scheme, Black, Blue and White, 3 prime colours that "just works" even if you don't like them.
Wouldn't it be nice (and it is certainly possible) If ubuntu created an attractive theme (Modern, sleek, attractive in that is doesnt look the windows 3.1 like the current theme) which could be 'colourised', i.e. you pick a colour from a palette and the theme is turned that colour. All folders, tool bars, etc. People could have black if they wanted, brown if they wanted, white if they wanted but there would still be the consistency of theme. It could start of brown of course so that it is clearly ubuntu.
They are all just a different shade of poo colour.
green, blue, grey, black. with dust, and various colors (shiki etc..) themes if possible.
I would love to see something in red and creame. Though thats a lot differnt from the horrid brown look...

+1 It seems so simple to change the background when the theme is changed...(maybe some 'oficial' backgrounds with colours other than brown).

ROTFL :lol: good point :) I think that ubuntu should use bright colours, not black. Like someone said... why ubuntu can't be as much beautiful as MAC OS X?

I find the Kubuntu theme beautiful too, also Sashin's link, but day-to-day usability must be considered so, in my opinion, it would be nice to have different 'moods' for choice. Like, for instance, the default ubuntu look has a different mood than the default Kubuntu one (I'm talking mainly about colours). EDIT - well,my bad here, since I've never really bothered with that only now I'm seeing that ubuntu has quite some options in changing themes and colour (although the default wallpapers makes us think that's not the case).
Whether you like it or not, they're never going to change from their brownish themes. That's what they're known for.
I'll take anything but blue. Tired of blue.....Love the brown...And if i don't like the new theme, I'll just change it :P
Im hoping they stick with brown. I like brown, theres plenty of browns that look nice. The 9.04 GDM looks nice. Its a cool brown ^^

The GUI colors and windowing themes take only a few minutes to adjust to something most people would feel comfortable with. Maybe more time should be put into deciding what new features and big fixes should be implemented than worrying about what it looks like.

Excuse me? Gnome, unlike KDE, can be skinned to look absolutely beautiful. Check out some of lyrae's work over on gnome-look, even OSX will be hard on the eyes after that.

I voted Orange, even though I dig the brown.
In reply to all the people who are asking blue, gray, green themes, I believe that Ubuntu should always use warm colors as the word itself means humanity to the others. I personally think that brown really suits Ubuntu and the default theme should be so.
That said I admit that the current color combination could be improved.

This is Jaunty's new login manager, I think it should give us a hint of what we can expect from 9.10, which is yellow, red, black & orange. Exactly. There's nothing wrong with brown as long as it's done correctly.
I think light tones of yellow would work, actually. It would still have a uniqueness about it. And look better than brown, for sure :-)

That color scheme is nice, except for the ugly orange. I say get rid of any traces of orange. I think that's one of the main reasons why the default colors are so ugly.

Anyone who uses Ubuntu expects the brown theme. As much as we may moan about it, Ubuntu and brown go together like umm...two things that go together well (my brain froze for a moment lol)
I really hope they do it in a more subtle manner, but brown is what we should expect
I think a tan, cream, light yellow/orange theme would be beautiful and would not abandon Ubuntu's main colors.
Today I saw new ubuntu 9.04 upsplash and I realized that ubuntu will never be beautiful :\
Black, orange and yellow for me. It screams potency, slickness and speed (stuff like hornets, hotrods 'n' stuff). It kinda says "I'm here and not to be trifled with".
I'd be above happy if Ubuntu could establish its identity with those colors as, as far as I know, no major OS is sitting on those colors yet as part of their branding. OSX and Kubuntu both got their blue going on, XP's got its Fischer-Price theme, Vista is close with its black'n'blue theme.

Yeah sure, I can just reskin it with Dust and stuff, but the default colors is what leaves an impression to newcomers and which adds to the impression of the "brand".

i voted for red becoz, although i really like the new dust theme, i dont think brown looks very good on an operating system.
so i voted red :D becoz it works with the ubuntu logo and i think a red/black theme would be very cool indeed.:):popcorn:

KDE is just as customisable if not more than GNOME.
I really dig the brown, it's tied in with Ubuntu's identity. But really, if it's used tastefully, I wouldn't care if they used hot pink as their new palette.
in Gnome I always had the "Kin_intrepid" theme which dipped the panels in a light orange and also the Window-frames where in brown which was more orange than brown.
This was really nice because it was not like all the other distros in blue and grey. But it gets boring over time.
Personally for me also the Dust and Darkroom themes are not the way like a normal OS should look like as they are too dark,

thats it. I also thought that blue, black and white is boring as all the other OS have the same combo. But when it is done and combinated nicely its really fresh and inspiring.
The green in OpenSuse is also nice but in my eyes it does not match with the blue window-frames.
Maybe the Koala should get a mixture from brown-orange, blue, white and black? But I don't have any clue how it should look like.
Anyway: it should have a new style of Wallpaper. The Wallpaper in Jaunty (Gnome) was disappointing, the wallpaper in Intrepid was not bad but the Hardy Heron... is still unmatched!
