Just a quick question. Has anyone ever used any open source finite element packages? I have a few closed solvers and mesh generators but never any open source. After a quick search I found: OpenFEM Elmer and CALCUIX all of which look promising. But has anyone any experience with them? Are they easy to use or adapt? Any other suggestions of programs?

Thanks all

Hi,

I have tried some open packages and easily got them to run in ubuntu. CalculiX and Salome.

On a daily basis I use ABAQUS on ubuntu and it works as it was intended to. CalculiX have the great advantage to use the familiar abaqus input-file format. However, the pre and post processor needs some "getting used to" time.

Salome-MECA with code-aster is promising. I have not really tried it, but it is up and running on my home computer. The pre and post precessor contain much more than cgx. If that is good, I do not know. I guess it is a matter of taste.

You can get Salome MECA at the download section on http://caelinux.com if you like to try it out.

Hope you got the answer you were looking for
