A few questions before I jump in

Hi there,

After a few days of deliberating I have decided I will partition the hardrive on my ibook and dual boot either yellow dog linux or ubuntu and OS X, I am still thinking about what linux distro to use. I have a few questions though before I start.

My question is, is there any concerns/things I just know if I decide to use ubuntu considering that I would install it on an apple and also a laptop? My second question is, do you guys know how I could find out if ubuntu supports an airport card(regular NOT extreme) and how to properly configure my airport card once I have ubuntu installed

airport ( not the extreme ) is autodetected in ubuntu and works like a charm... ;-)

cheers - pistooli thanks! But I have run into one more problem, before I go ahead with the install. I don't know how to back up all my data(mostly songs, and movies I want to save). When I upgraded from 10.2 to OS X 10.3 I backed up my stuff to my Ipod, but now I don't have enough free space on that. Anyone have any suggestions...I really want to get linux running on my ibook

two machines and an ipod hehe? dude, me thinks you should buy a burner lol.

I would highly recommend that you dedicate one machine as your linux learning tool and once you're up and running with that machine and your distro of choice...personally i'd go with Ubuntu, but i guess it depends on your needs... .then again you may want yellowdog on one machine and Ubuntu on the other... i don't think there are many linux users who haven't tried at least a few diferent distros before settling in. Ubuntu is by far the better 'beginner' choice...IMHO

I am only planning on installing it on one machine. What I meant by my orginal question was that I was wondering if there was any thing I need to know considering that this one machine is an apple laptop. (I want to install on an ibook). I orginally posted it in the installation forum not knowning there was a ppc forum. I just wanted to know if there was any issues with laptop related things such as the lcd screen etc., and by scanning through the forums I haven't found any. My main concern was configuring the airport card, because I have used linux before, but have never had to configure or install it. Thanks again for the help

In regards to backing up your data - I would suggest first syncing your ipod with your itunes library, get rid of everything on the iPod (because it will be on the computer), then backup *only your home directory* to the ipod. All of your settings and personal data will be saved.

if i were you I would back up the iBook to the other machine you have and leave the iPod alone... :-) you could probably do it very easy over your network connection...

regarding the airport, my iBook's airport card was automatically configured in ubuntu and works just excellent... the only thing I have not tried is WEP ( since I am using hw address limitation only on my wifi network )
