8.04 backports flash10

I just installed 8.04 on a computer. I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. I, then, enabled the backports in software sources. It updated flash9 to flash10...now, when I go to youtube, it says flash is not installed.

The only way I've found it to work is to disable the backports, remove flash, then reinstall flashplugin-nonfree.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you on a 32 or 64 bit processor? I'm on 64 and to get it to work best I just download it from Adobe. For 32 go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Download the tar.gz file and extract it. Put libflashplayer.so in /home/user/.mozilla/plugins, restart firefox and see if that works. For 64 bit go to http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/

I have no problem doing that, but isn't it recommended that you only get stuff from repositories?

Well, honestly, I'm not sure what is officially recommended. It works well for me. The only issue I see with it is that you would not be updated automatically against some kind of threat or bug, you would have to check for updates your self.

That's what I'm concerned about. What you just said is one of the things that I like about Ubuntu.

Yeah, mine too. And after looking for that link to Adobe Labs I see that there is an update that I'm about two week behind on. So it looks like my advice was no advice at all:( Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

One question though: Do you need flash 10 for something specific? 8.10 comes with it available by default and so will 9.04.

No. No reason. I like 8.04, so I wanted to stick with it for a while. But, I wanted to enable the backports, so I could get some updates. Update Manager wants to update flash, and that's where my problem starts.
