Well, I suppose we must get at this early, eh? ;)

As the title says, let's brainstorm up some names for Ubuntu 10.04.

This topic was brought to you by the letter:

Lame Lemur Leaping Lemur Lovely Lemur Lord Lemur Likable Lemur Laughing Lemur Lewd Lemur Looking Lemur Lard Lemur Leering Lemur Law-obiding Lemur

#3

Laughing Ladybird

(BTW: be careful about searching Youtube for Lemur clips, content may offend!)

#4

#5

There's a facebook group trying to get them to call it smoething like "Lubricious Lobster" or something, lol

#6

#12

La'cryma

#13

Well considering they abandoned their trend of unique animal names such as Eft, Gibbon, Heron and Ibex and went with KOALA, I'm going to suggest a simple name:

Leaping Ladybug.

This may change however, because I haven't given it as much thought as I did KINETIC KIWI. That, and I've been awake for more than thirty-six hours and need some sleep.

It's obvious I'm still sour over the whole 9.10 name, isn't it? :(

#14

As long as the animal is Llama i'll be happy

#15

Leaping Lemming!

#16

lvleph said: Lazy Lion

+1. This is a great name, and it can be also "converted to usage" in the OS. (ie, you being lazy, so the OS does things for you, etc)

#17

Erm...Lovely Lice :D

I think that lazy is perhaps not a good thing though. It could reflect badly on Ubuntu.

#18

Ladybug would be a terrible name because it's only known as that in North America. In the rest of the english speak-speaking world it's ladybird, so I don't think it would be particularly endearing to a South African/Brit like Mark Shuttleworth

#19

Leery lion Leading lion Likable lion Lusory lion Leaping lion Leaner lion(only any good for Xubuntu i suppose)

Being a Leo,anything with lion in the name would please me.:D

#20

Loopy Llama ;)

#21

Laughing Loki Leering Loki Libellous Loki

#22

Larky Lemur

Larky- *High-spirited; zestful; zany*

#23

Yeah be careful it is super easy to offend people in this community

#24

How about Leaping Llams

#25

Lost Leopard

#26

Logical Leopard

Logical Linux? (I know, not an animal, but still...)

#27

Laughing Llama.

Discussion over.

You can close the thread now, thankyouverymuch.:D

In the United States, LadyBird is the name of a first lady.

#31

Thelasko said: In the United States, LadyBird is the name of a first lady.

true, although her nickname was in fact derived from the beetle that americans typically refer to as "ladybugs". I'm not advocating the use of ladybird or ladybug, since either would lead to confusion.

#32

Laughing Loon

#33

Lethal Llama/Lynx Lunatic Llama/Lynx

#34

Liberty Leopard 10.04

#35

Liberating Lipizzaner

#36

I don't know....I think let us go with Leaping Leopard.

#40

Lubricious Lobster!

#41

#43

Ooo!

1) Laconic Llama 2) Laconic Loon 3) Laconic Lemur 4) Laconic Lobster

I like cats, too, but I wouldn't want to get Ubuntu confused with that other OS.

Now that Mark Shuttleworth has announced the name of the new Ubuntu release to be Karmic Koala, I thought it would be fun to play around with some ideas for the release following that. I kinda like the sound of Loyal Lynx.

#48

Oh not again, it's too soon! wait until karmic koala makes a beta release and then we can name it.

#49

Its just for fun jeez, don't get your panties all up in a bunch.

#50

I don't wear panties. Anywho I just feel it's too early, thats all, but start if you'd like, nobody is stopping you.

#51

Jaunty is not even out, wait for Karmic to be out, so we can start naming Leaping Llama, I mean, 10.04 :P

#52

Leaping llama hahahahaha

Why, in Mark Shuttleworth's name, would you want to call Ubuntu 10.04 "Lubricious Lobster"?!

#73

Lively leviathan

#74

Lively Lemur = excellent name

i am defo posting that when it comes to the official brainstorm :D

#75

Lively Lemur (already posted) Lazy Leopard Laughing Linx

#86

Loopy Lizard

#87

This is my list until the end of the alphabet. What they will do after the alphabet is through is anyone's guess.

Leaping Lizard Manic Monkey Noisy Narwhale Obnoxious Opossum Picky Porcupine Quirky Quail Rambunctious Rhino Secretive Sloth Tiny Tadpole Unassuming Urchin Virtuous Vulture W is already Used (Warty Warthog) X-otic Xerus (They will likely skip X) Youthful Yak Zany Zebra

#90

Lyrical Lark Levitating Llama Laal Langur

#91

I think that best option is Lithe Lynx because who knows if next time we have the oportunity to use L as initial in a codename if they exists. Here in Spain there are less than 200 Iberic Lynx.

#92

Lathargic Lonkey

Lonkey is a lebra, and a donkey!

or, Lundquist Lynx

#93

Lamentable Lion (The cynic in me predicts breakage ahead) Leering Lamb (I sorta enjoy the wolf in sheeps clothing feel of this one)

For where the state of Ubuntu will be by then I vote this most appropriate, and is a bit sensuous, elitist, and rolls off the tongue.

#96

So, y'know, there'll possibly be a 10.4 release some time.

Considering Ubuntu's popularity & release rate, what will happen come the 32.4 version?

Anyway, that's besides the point. Stop getting off topic! =D

Post the name of the next release here!

I propose the following name: Quirky Quail.

#97

I believe 10.04 is L names.

Loony Llama.

#98

well since the 9.10 release is Karmic Koala and the releases are in alphabetical order..just some ideas Laughing (Gas) Lemur Lazy Lion Liplicking Lycanthrope?

#108

Leet Lobster

Lonely Louse

I know they're bad, I'm just really bored having to resize my partition to make room for jaunty.

#109

It will be a long-term release like Hardy, so it should have a name that reflects long-term usage (like Hardy).

I vote for: Long-Lived Lion or Long-Lived Leopard

#110

Whatever the second (animal) part is, I just hope we get "lively".

Ubuntu Lively. Sounds nice, doesn't it?

#111

Hmm... "Lounge Lizard"? :P

#150

Leaping Lemur, hands down. Leave the cats to Apple. Plus, I believe that Ubuntu names shouldn't have dangerous animals on them. The names (so far) have always included friendly animals, or at least not carnivores. Except for Warthog. I don't like warthogs :O. Scary animals, when they're scared. Scary. Scary. Scary. Anyways, +1 for Leaping Lemur.

#151

Lightning Lema Lightning Leopard Light Litchen

#152

It should obviously depend on what is emphasized about the release.

adjectives by theme: Leaping - fast Lively - Quick... Would be good if there were plans for more background processes to benefit the OS. Lusterous - sexy new theme/graphical stuff Luminescant - Same as above, plus an emphasis on leading the croud. Lithe - Flexible/graceful in how it preformed + UI improvements Luxurious - UI improvements/ease of use. Lavish - Same as above. Larky - Easy/convenient/fun to use Learned - Built with knowledge gained from all other releases. Lucky - Intuitive, When you try something, it works, regardless of how unlikely it seems. Lumbering - Well, it is a LTS... What do you expect by the end of its life?

nouns by their attributes: Lemur - Agile Lynx - Quick Liger - Sturdy, freakishly strong Lobster - Hardened, secure Leviathan - Mythically powerful and agile

My ideal release would be something like Larky Lemur

No contest - we should break the goofy animal naming and move Ubuntu stable to 'Lagrange' and leave it there.

For anyone interested - in addition to being a generally brilliant individual, Joseph Louis Lagrange analyzed gravitational stability and came up with the aptly named Lagrangian points - orbital points where a small body, acted upon only by gravitational forces can maintain a stable position.

#154

Two ideas:

Lackadaisical Lemming Loony Loon (Hey, they did Warty Warthog)

#158

Leaping Lizard!

#159

emo emu!

#160

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lycan

"lucid" Adjective 1. clear and easily understood 2. capable of clear thought, particularly between periods of insanity or delirium 3. shining or glowing [Latin lucidus full of light]

#161

ubuntu 10 luxicon

ubuntu 10 lexicon

ubuntu 10 lithium

wait i guess it should be safarian animal themed.

ubuntu 10 leaping leopard makes sense, has a ring to it.

the leopard is quick, cunning, agile and powerful... if the next release deserves such an adjective title, then i think it should take it.

#162

Lazy Lemur I'd use it.

+1 on Llamas in general, not to go Carl Wheezer on anyone. http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/llama Maybe leaping llama? I dunno.

Lusty Lemur would get my vote

*Lusty*, as in:

And *Lemur* in honor of Ida (even though Ida isn't technically a Lemur, but a transitional species between higher primates and Lemur-like primates). If a nearly complete ~47 million year old fossil that seeded the branch of the tree of life that lead to humans (for better or for worse!) doesn't represent "long-term support," I don't know what does.

  • full of strength and vitality : healthy, vigorous
  • hearty, robust
  • enthusiastic, rousing
#172

I would choose the name on where the operating system will be;

- though arguably lacking in software perhaps, both in terms of security and graphical capabilities it either exceeds or matches both MacOSX and Windows in every aspect.

  1. Reliable
  2. Mighty
  3. Graphically striking (assuming the new theme is real cool as is planned)
  4. Boots fast

A name that might be considered;

Lightning Lion

The Lion reflects the reliability, might, and graphical awe

Lightning reflects the might, graphical strikingness and fast booting.

Ubuntu is very mature now. It should have a name that reflects that. It is only honest to the users of other operating systems.

#173

One of these: lamb, lemur, leopard, lion, lizard, llama, lobster, lovebird, lynx; combined with one of these: labored, lackadaisical, lacking, lamentable, languid, large, late, laughable, lavish, lazy, lean, learned, legal, lethal, level, lewd, light, likeable, literate, little, lively, long, longing, lopsided, loutish, lovely, loving, low, lowly, lucky, ludicrous, lush, luxuriant, lying, lyrical; generates 315 possibilites. There are more adjectives beginning with 'l' and more animal names, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

My favorite: Labored lemur. On second thought, how could lemurs be used for labor?

If found a site that lists a bunch of "L" adjectives:

labored, lackadaisical, lacking, lamentable, languid, large, late, laughable, lavish, lazy, lean, learned, legal, lethal, level, lewd, light, likeable, literate, little, lively, long, longing, lopsided, loutish, lovable, lovely, loving, low, lowly, lucky, ludicrous, lush, luxuriant, lying, lyrical

and another with "L" animals:

Labrador, Ladybug, Llama, Lamb, Lamprey, Langur, Lapwing (bird), Lark, Laughing thrush, Leafbird, Leafhopper, Leafwing (insect; butterfly), Leatherback Sea Turtle, Leech, Lemming, Lemur, Leonberger, Leopard, Leopard Seal, Leveret, Lice, Liger, Lightningbug, Limpet, Limpkin, Ling, Lion, Lionfish, Lizard, Llama, Lobo, Lobster, Locust, Loggerhead turtle, Longhorn (cattle), Longspur (bird), Loon, Lorikeet, Louse, Lovebird, Lowchen, Lungfish, Lynx

Personally I'm a fan of:

Loyal Labrador, Laughable Loggerhead (a turtle), Ludicrous Lemer, Lucky Leopard, Lively Llama, or Likeable Lynx.

However, if the Ubuntu team wants to start sticking with a bird theme for extended support releases like "Hardy Heron" you could do Lavish Loon or Lovable Lark.

#195

The name has to be short and easily to pronounce, such as Loony Lark, or Lewd Lice (NEVER!) Anyway, "l" is easier than "k" ;)

#196

However, if the Ubuntu team wants to start sticking with a bird theme for extended support releases like "Hardy Heron" you could do Lavish Loon or Lovable Lark.

I personally like loquacious lark or loquacious lobo

Lyrical Lorikeet has a nice consonance to it.

#235

Long-standing Lapwing or Lusty Lynx?

My vote goes to Lean Lynx though - it rocks.

However, I do like Lithe Lynx as it sounds like Leith Links which is a grassy area in Edinburgh, Scotland next to which the creators of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) - Rockstar North Ltd - have their head office

Rockstar North

Leith Links

+1 for Lolling Linus...though I'm not sure how the Ubuntu team feels about naming releases after deities ;)

Let's say... Lovely Linux! (yes, it's an animal :D) :)

#248

Since 10.04 is going to be a LTS release, shouldn't it be named for a bird? (following the pattern of Dapper Drake and Hardy Heron) So, I'm thinking the Loon is the most likely choice. Or the Lapwing.

#249

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Loon

lu·cid adj.

  1. Easily understood; intelligible.
  2. Mentally sound; sane or rational.
#250

It Seems that Ubuntu 10.04 is code-named Lucid Lynx, as told in Twitter. It says that it was officially announced bu Mr.Mark Shuttleworth. :-k

#253

How about Leaping Lion! They are the king animal of the jungle. Haven't you all seen the Lion King? I think it would fit perfectly for Ubuntu 10.04. Thats my opionion. It would be a cool name though because Ubuntu in my opinion is the King of Operating Systems!
